Châteaubourg is a French municipality with 244 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in Ardèche, in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants are called Châteaubourgeois (es) .
geography
The municipality extends along the right bank of the Rhone in the northern part of the department. Châteaubourg borders the neighboring communes of Bourg-lès-Valence in the neighboring Drôme department on the opposite side of the river, as well as the capital of the canton of the same name, Saint-Péray . The next largest city is Valence , ten kilometers southeast.
history
Châteaubourg was founded as a ship settlement on the banks of the Rhône and was dominated by shipping for a long time. However, ancient remains of a Christian altar prove that the place was already inhabited by people 2000 years ago.
The place was first mentioned in 1270, when the French King Louis the Saint took a rest on his Seventh Crusade in Châteaubourg before moving on to Tunis . During the French Revolution , the place had the toponym Rochebourg .

Culture and sights
The municipality's castle with its medieval facade and round towers dates from the 13th century, but was rebuilt several times in the 17th and 19th centuries. During the Wars of Religion and the French Revolution, the building was damaged several times and then restored. It has changed hands several times since its completion. At first it belonged to the Clérieu family, then to the Beaudiners, before it finally came into the possession of the Fay in the 15th century.
The tower of the castle of Durtail is also worth seeing as a historical monument, as is the altar and the black representation of the virgin in the local church. The community also houses an old seafarers' cross. On the banks of the Rhône, the rock face of La Goule falls steeply into the valley.
politics
The municipality belongs to the Rhône Crussol municipal association. The winemaker Laurent Courbis has been the town's mayor since 2001.
Economy and Infrastructure
In the past, the municipality's economy was dominated by shipping. Large parts of the population worked as sailors or boatmen. Today agriculture is the main source of income for the population.
