history

Originally Mariac was under a single parish . But in 1853 it was divided into two areas with Mariac (613 hectares) and Pont-de-Fromentières (876 hectares). In 1873 they even considered dividing the place into two independent communities, but this project failed. One of the main causes of the then dispute was the fact that the French , the Occitan displaced more and more.

Population development

The place had around 1000 inhabitants around 1800. With 1,313 it reached the largest population in 1861.

economy

Mariac was traditionally a farming village, with cattle breeding ( cattle and sheep ) dominating. Thanks to the mandrels and water power , tanneries as well as sawing and milling mills were built on site . Later these businesses were replaced by silk mills. Today - based on this tradition - glass wool is produced. Marius Chomarat founded the company Groupe Chomarat in Le Cheylard and Mariac , which manufactures special textiles and plastics as well as glass fibers . Today it is the most important local employer. Mariac also has a dozen or so gardening and beekeeping centers . Poultry is raised and sheep's cheese and wool are produced for the local market .

Attractions

  • The Romanesque - Gothic church Église Saint-Étienne was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to St. Stephen . The church was renovated in 1962. The bell gable and the calvary are under monument protection.
  • The church of Pont-de-Fromentières was built in 1853 and replaced a small bell tower ( clocheton ), which heralded the mass, from 1770. The old building on the left bank of the Dorne has been preserved.
  • The Ferme de Garnier homestead is at the entrance to the village. It can be entered via an idyllic stone bridge from the mid-18th century. Tradition has it that a tunnel once connected the courtyard with the former hunting lodge on the other side of the Dorne.
  • Girond's old bread oven is still in use for festival activities. Its restoration took place in 1971 at the behest of Father Michael.
  • The Pont-de-Fromentières wooden footbridge was built in 2005. It is 25 meters long and connects the sports field with the old town hall.
