Mairie and Notre-Dame church in the Monts d'Ardèche

Le Chambon is a French municipality with 46 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Its inhabitants are called chambonnais (es) .

geography

The municipality extends in the center of the Massif Central and borders the neighboring municipalities of Mariac and Saint-Martial . It is part of the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park . The next largest city is Aubenas , 25 kilometers to the southeast. The river Dorne flows through the municipality.

history

In the Middle Ages, the place was under the feudal rule of the rich Chambon family . It was not until 1904 that the village received the status of an independent municipality after it had split off from the more industrial town of Saint-Andéol-de-Fourchades .

During the Second World War, the residents opposed the extradition of local Jews demanded by the Germans - an example of resistance and the refusal of obedience against their better judgment.
