Mars is a place and several hamlets ( hameaux existing) and individual farms southern French community with 264 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the historic cultural landscape of the Vivarais .

Mars is located on the Lignon River , which forms the border with the Haute-Loire department in the west , about 50 kilometers (driving distance) southwest of Annonay and about 42 kilometers east of Le Puy-en-Velay at an altitude of about 1060 m above sea level. d. M. The climate is temperate; Rain falls throughout the year.

The continuous decline in the number of inhabitants since the middle of the 19th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs.
economy
Traditionally, the population lived from cattle breeding and a little agriculture, which, however, only produced low yields due to the altitude. Today tourism plays an important role in the economic life of the place in the form of the rental of holiday homes ( gîtes ).
history
The history of the place located on an old Roman road is largely in the dark; the place name is traced back to the Roman god of war. The church was built in the 11th or 12th century. In the second half of the 16th century, the place was affected by the turmoil of the Huguenot Wars (1562–1598).
Attractions
- The parish church of St-Romain-le-Désert , built perhaps as early as the 11th century, is built from largely unworked rubble stones . It has a small bell gable above the entrance on the south side. The roof is covered with stone shingles ( lauzes ).
- The Protestant church ( temple ) , built in 1850, is located just outside the village.
- The stone bridge over the Lignon dates from the 18th century.
