history

Boucieu is still known today as the former capital of the Haut Vivarais , when the municipality was still one of the richest in the entire area and had a great influence on the politics of the region. In 1291 Philippe-le-Bel even built a bailiwick of the Knights Templar in the place, and the housed there royal justice court on the territory of former lords Géronton de Saint-Romain-Valmordane. The king even granted the citizens a law on exemption from fees, so that the residents did not have to pay a large part of the taxes until 1789.

In 1712 the village gained new fame under the impulse of the Catholic missionary Pierre Vigne . The founder of the Order of the Sisters of the Holy Sacrament of Valence , who was religiously, medically and missionary active, lived in Boucieu from 1710 to 1740.

During the French Revolution the place was named Boucieu-le-Doux .

Culture and sights

Saint-Jean church

Boucieu-le-Roi is a village with old houses and narrow streets. The house of the former Ballei and the church of Saint-Jean l'Evangéliste , which was built in the 13th century and restored in the 15th century, are among the special structures . It was not given its final name until 1492. Today the church is a contemporary witness of the changeable history of the community, because it was modified several times and adapted to the modern architectural styles of that time. In the middle of the 16th century, votive chapels were added to each side of the nave. The numerous religious wars (also called "Cevennes Wars") that took place in this area were noted on the building blocks . In 1574 the Protestants made it a temple, but in 1617 it was reassigned to church. The place is also home to an old oratorio today .

The Pont du Roi , a bridge over the Doux River, was also inaugurated in 1492 along with the church. Only a few steps away there was an old Roman arch bridge in the Middle Ages, which testified to the settlement of the community in ancient times. It was destroyed at the beginning of the 18th century during the Cevennes Wars, so that only the two bridgeheads are preserved today.

The Chemin de Fer du Vivarais , a meter-gauge museum train that took tourists through the Vivarais countryside , stopped at the local train station. Since 1969 the train has operated between Tournon-sur-Rhône and Lamastre , but operations had to be temporarily suspended for safety reasons. (Status 2011)

The museum dedicated to the priest Pierre Vigne has been housed in the old mansion of Boucieu since 1880. The building was bought back by the Community of Supérieure Générale de la Congrégation du Saint-Sacrement and shows various exhibits from the daily life of the missionary and his order. Pierre Vigne's house also houses a small part of the exhibition. The congregation of his order was also founded here. According to legend, his body was buried in one of the church's chapels. On October 3, 2004, Pierre Vigne was beatified by Pope John Paul II . A large Way of the Cross, also called Grand Voyage de Pierre Vigne , which stops at 39 different chapels in the region, still commemorates the most famous citizen of the municipality. It starts at the wall of the local church.
