Saint-Georges-les-Bains ( Occitan : Sant Jordi ) is a French municipality with 2282 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Saint-Georges-les-Bains belongs to the Arrondissement of Tournon-sur-Rhône and the canton of Rhône-Eyrieux . The inhabitants are called Saint-Georgois (es) .
The municipality consists of the localities of Saint-Georges and Saint-Marcel .
geography
Saint-Georges-les-Bains extends on the western bank of the Rhone . Saint-Georges-les-Bains is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Toulaud in the north, Charmes-sur-Rhône in the east and northeast, Étoile-sur-Rhône in the east and southeast, Beauchastel in the south and Gilhac-et-Bruzac in the west.
Culture and sights
- On a rocky promontory overlooking the Turzon Valley, 700 meters southwest of the village of Saint-Georges-les-Bains and one and a half kilometers from the Rhone Valley, are the imposing ruins of the village of Saint-Marcel. On top of the mountain rise the ruins of the castle, below which an important market town had developed on the mountainside, which is now ruinous. She owned a church and a cemetery. The whole thing was protected by a mighty, well-preserved city wall. The village was gradually abandoned in the early 19th century.
