history
Chanéac was first mentioned in 1099. The place was previously known by its Roman name Chaneacium . At that time, the Fay family ruled the region. In 1099, the first year after the conquest of Jerusalem, Pierre de Fay confirmed the donation from the Church of Chanéac. In the same year the church of Sainte-Appolinaire , near the village, was donated by the diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay . The Chanéac castle of the same name was mentioned for the first time in 1229. It was built by Philippa de Fay in honor of the then Bishop of Le Puy. In 1284 there was a small war between the liege lord Guillaume de Poitiers and the priest of Saint-Martin-de-Valamas Baudouin . In 1320 there was another conflict, which was ended by an agreement between Pastor Bertrand de Rivière and Guillaume de Poitiers. The limits of his possessions were precisely defined and redefined. Donations to the bishops of Le Puy are reported repeatedly up to 1343. In 1362 Eléonore de Poitiers and Bermond III married in the church of Chanéac . d'Anduze , the former feudal lord of La Voulte-sur-Rhône . In 1378 it is thanks to the lawyer of d'Andouze, Etienne de Chanéac , that the influence of the noble family Poitiers was finally stopped, because he represented the interests of his ruler in a violent conflict. In gratitude for this, he received power over the community after the death of Louis d'Andouze and became a feudal lord. Later the place was taken over by the diocese of Viviers and a sub-delegation of the Haut-Vivarais . Then Chanéac became a fiefdom of the de Chambarlhac family , whose roots lie in the neighboring Haute-Loire department . The family's castle was in the Saliouse valley, three kilometers west of the center of Chanéac. Today only ruins remain of it.
