geography
Saint-Agrève is on the departmental roads D120 and D9. The rivers Eyrieux and Sumène (a tributary of the Dordogne ) flow through the municipality. The place is considered the gateway to the Regional Natural Park of Monts d'Ardèche ( Parc naturel régional des Monts d'Ardèche ).
history
In Gallo-Roman times, a fortress was built on what was then called Mont Ursin , Mount of the Bear. The fortress was called Cinnacum , settlement of the Cinna. Over time, the name became Chinacum and the mountain was now called Mont Chiniac .
In the 7th century a bishop from Puy-en-Velay named Agrève tried to Christianize the area around what was then Chinacum . He founded a parish in Chinacum and died there on February 1, 602. In his memory, Chinacum was renamed Sanctus Agrippa , Saint-Agrève. He was buried in Saint-Agrève, but his bones were later brought to Puy-en-Velay.
Residents of the place belonged (along with those from many other places) from 1941 to 1944 to the supporters of the Jewish rescue actions around the couple Trocmé with the main town Le Chambon-sur-Lignon , which essentially comprised the whole Plateau Vivarais - Lignon , i.e. in the today's division of parts of the Haute-Loire departments on the eastern edge and Ardèche on the western edge.
