Arcens is a French municipality with 376 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Ardèche in the Region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The inhabitants are called Arcensois and Arcensoises .
geography
The municipality is located in the middle of the Boutières massif, a sub-mountain range of the Cevennes , surrounded by wooded hills. The place is on the route from Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc to the source of the Loire on Mont Mézenc and is part of the Regional Natural Park of Monts d'Ardèche . The next largest city is Aubenas , 32 kilometers to the southeast. The river Eysse also crosses the municipality. It is only a few meters to the border with the Auvergne region and the Haute-Loire department .
After Le Puy-en-Velay is 55 kilometers neighboring municipalities are Chanéac in the north, Saint-Martin-de-Valamas in the Northeast, Mariac in the southeast, Saint-Adéol-de-Fourchades and Saint-Martial in the south and Borée in the West.
history
The town's old church was first mentioned in the 12th century and at that time it belonged to the diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay . The village itself appears for the first time in the title deed of the Count of Aiguillon in the 14th century, to whom the parish also belonged until the 18th century.

Culture and sights
The place is known for the Château d'Arcens or Château Laurent from the 14th century. It is a former permanent house that was owned by the Laurent family from the 17th to 19th centuries . The 12th century church was destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 19th century.
The community is also home to numerous natural monuments and viewpoints. One of them is the medieval stone cross on the Place d'Issas . Even more famous is the Rocher de Sauton , a basalt rock, with the Saint-Julien chapel , from which you can enjoy a panoramic view over the Cevennes .
At the source of the Eysse there is a huge colony of river herons.
