The Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc is one of the highest peaks of the Monts d'Ardèche in the south-eastern Massif Central . The mountain itself is a striking, extinct volcanic cone made of phonolite rock with a good view of the Massif Central.
location
Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc is located in the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Nature Park, about halfway between Aubenas (approx. 44 km to the south-east) and Le Puy-en-Velay (approx. 45 km to the north-west).
Watershed
The Loire rises on the slopes of the mountain. It flows into the Atlantic at Saint-Nazaire and is the longest river in France at 1004 km. The river Ardèche rises not far from here ; in its lower reaches it forms the impressive Gorges de l'Ardèche and after 125 kilometers flows into the Rhône as a right tributary at Pont-Saint-Esprit , whose water reaches the Mediterranean Sea.
