1-11 Great Western Terrace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is a row of residential buildings at 1–11 Great Western Terrace in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 it was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. The buildings are also part of a larger Category A monument ensemble along Great Western Terrace.

history

Construction of the complex, based on a design by the eminent Scottish architect Alexander Thomson , began in 1867. When Thomson's health deteriorated in 1873 (he died two years later), Robert Turnbull took over part of his duties. In the early 1880s, John and John James Burnet directed the final work. They adopted Thomson's designs with the exception of changes to the back of the building.

Various buildings have changed over the decades. Alexander Nisbet Paterson added a billiard room to building No. 3 between 1890 and 1905 . The revision of buildings 4, 7 and 8 was essentially limited to the interior. Robert Lorimer carried out the work on the latter building .

The building complex has been the subject of seven specialist publications since it was founded.

description

The row of buildings is set back from the Great Western Road ( A82 ), a busy access road in northwest Glasgow. It rests on a raised base above the street. The northeast-facing front facade of the Greek Revival building is 58 axes wide, which are arranged in the scheme 6–8–30–8–6. With the exception of the three-story, eight-axis-wide risalits , the complex is two-story. The entrance portals, each with four Ionic columns, to the individual residential units are accessible via front stairs. Elongated windows flank the recessed doors with a closing window . On the two risalits they are also decorated with pilasters . A window ledge runs below the upper floor ; above it a frieze . The facade closes with a Antefix -ornamentierten cornices .
