The Isère ( Isara in ancient times) is a river in France that runs in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It rises in the Savoy Alps near the border with Italy , in the Vanoise National Park . The headwaters are formed by the Glacier des Sources de l'Isère , named after the river , which extends on the northern flank of the Grande Aiguille Rousse . The actual source is at Col de la Vache in the municipality of Val-d'Isère . Despite major changes in direction, the river generally drains in a south-westerly direction and flows into the Rhône as a left tributary after 286 kilometers below Pont-de-l'Isère , north of Valence . The Isère crosses the Savoie , Isère (for which it is namesake) and Drôme departments on its way .
