Marc Colombat de L'Isère (born June 28, 1797 in Vienne (Isère) , † June 20, 1851 in Paris ) was a French doctor .

Life

Marc Colombat de L'Isère first studied law in Grenoble and, embroiled in political affairs, had to flee to Savoy and Switzerland , but was granted an amnesty in 1824. He then studied medicine in Montpellier , Strasbourg and Paris. His mechanical talent led him to invent various instruments, e.g. B. one for amputation of the portio vaginalis uteri , which he wrote in De l'hystérotomie, ou l'amputation du col de la matrice dans les affections cancéreuses, ... avec la description de l'hystérotome et de plusieurs autres instrumens nouveaux ... (Paris 1828). At the same time he also worked on De la compression et de la ligature des vaisseaux (Paris 1828) and a Nouvelle méthode de pratiquer la taille sous-pubienne (Paris 1830).

For his entire life, however, Colombat turned his attention to stuttering , and while correctly recognizing the nervous nature of the suffering, he tried to combat it by means of a method in which particular emphasis was placed on the rhythmic pronunciation of the words. During continued exercises in rhythmic speaking, careful consideration was given to the mouth positions required to pronounce the individual letters. Colombat had set up an orthophonic institute in Paris to accept pupils and achieved such success there that in 1833 the Academy of Sciences awarded him a price of 50,000 francs. He put the results of his research on stuttering down in several papers , including: Du bégaiement et de tous les autres vices de la parole (Paris 1830; German translation by AEF Schulze, Ilmenau 1831; 2nd edition 1831 under the title L'orthophonie ou physiologie et thérapeutique du bégaiement ; German translation by HF Flies, Quedlinburg 1840; 3rd edition 1843 under the title Traité de tous les vices de la parole ... ). His Strasbourg dissertation, with which he became a doctor in 1828, was devoted to the same subject.

Colombat later wrote:

Appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor , Colombat died on June 20, 1851 at the age of 54 in Paris after a long illness that made him unable to speak.
