The relationship between the Cook Islands and Portugal describes the interstate relationship between the Cook Islands and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1995.

The relationships are unencumbered, but not very intensive due to the few common points of contact and the great distance of over 16,000 km. The islands are relatively well known to Portuguese philatelists and friends of exotic travel destinations.

In 2017, a citizen of the Cook Islands was registered in Portugal, in the Algarve , while no citizen of Portugal was registered as a consular in the Cook Islands.

Pedro Fernández de Quirós was the first Portuguese in the Cook Islands in 1606

In 1606 the Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernández de Quirós landed on the Cook Islands. The first Europeans landed there as early as 1595 when the Spaniard Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra set foot on the northern island of Pukapuka.

According to the Treaty of Saragossa , the islands fell into the Spanish sphere of interest, so that no deeper relationship with Portugal developed afterwards.

From 1880 the Cook Islands, named after the English navigator James Cook , became a British colony. In 1965 they became independent, in continuing association with New Zealand .

On August 12, 1995, the Cook Islands and Portugal established diplomatic relations.

Portugal does not have an embassy in the Cook Islands, they belong to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador to Australia. There are also no Portuguese consulates there; the consulate general of Portugal in Sydney is responsible .

The Cook Islands also do not have a representation of their own in Portugal; the country has its only embassy in Europe in Brussels. The citizens of the Cook Islands are citizens of New Zealand , which is responsible for the foreign policy and defense of the Cook Islands. The New Zealand consulate in Lisbon is also the consulate of the Cook Islands in Portugal.

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP does not have a branch in the Cook Islands, the AICEP office in Sydney is responsible.

In 2016 there was no countable trade between the Cook Islands and Portugal.
