The Portuguese-Samoan relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and Samoa . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1995.

Relations are considered unencumbered, but very poorly developed, as the countries are very far apart and have very little historical, political or economic points of contact.

In 2017, no Portuguese citizens were consularly registered in Samoa, while one Samoan citizen was registered in Portugal, in the Setúbal district .

history

At Lefaga Beach on the island of Upolu: In Portugal, Samoa is primarily known as a South Seas travel destination

At the time of Portuguese expansion from the 15th century onwards, the islands of Samoas were not a destination for Portuguese explorers, as the area fell into the Spanish sphere after the Treaty of Saragossa of 1494 and there was therefore no Portuguese motivation to work here.

After West Samoa became independent from New Zealand in 1962, no special points of contact with Portugal developed, not even after the end of the colonial Estado Novo dictatorship in Portugal after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

On June 9, 1995, Portugal and Samoa established direct diplomatic relations. On April 29, 1997 , Zózimo Justo da Silva , Portuguese ambassador to Australia, was the first representative of Portugal to be accredited to Samoa.

In 2015 and 2016 in particular, Samoa (as a member of the Pacific ACP group ) and Portugal (as an EU member) signed a number of trade, visa and cooperation agreements. The EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), on the other hand, has been waiting for the conclusion of the next stage of negotiations since July 2013, and no agreement could yet be reached during this phase, particularly on issues relating to fishing.

diplomacy

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Samoa; the Portuguese ambassador in the Australian capital Canberra is responsible . There are also no Portuguese consulates on the Samoan Islands.

Samoa also does not have its own embassy in Portugal; the embassy in Brussels , the only Samoan representation in Europe, is responsible. The country also has no consulates in Portugal.

economy

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP does not have its own branch in Samoa; the AICEP office in Sydney, Australia is responsible.

In 2018 there was no measurable trade between Portugal and Samoa.

Sports

Football is the undisputed national sport in Portugal. The Portuguese national soccer team and the Samoas national team have not yet met. The Samoan women's national football team , which has not yet participated in the Algarve Cup , has not yet met the Portuguese women's national team (as of March 2019).

The national sport in Samoa, on the other hand, is rugby union . The Samoan national rugby union team has not yet made the Portuguese selection , but the two countries have already met in sevens rugby , for example at the USA Sevens tournament of the World Rugby Sevens Series 2016/17: the semi-final game in Las Vegas March 6, 2016 ended 29:14 for Samoa. Both national teams competed at the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Romania in August 2018, but started in different groups.
