The Portuguese-Vanuatu relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and Vanuatu . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1983. The bilateral relations are problem-free, but not very intensive, as there are comparatively few current or historical points of contact between the two countries.

history

Pedro Fernández de Quirós

The Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernández de Quirós was the first European to reach the New Hebrides on May 3, 1606 and founded the first European colony in what is now Vanuatu on its largest island, Espiritu Santo . The Portuguese then founded other small settlements, including one on the island of Efate , from which today's capital Port Vila emerged. The name goes back to the Portuguese word for small town ( Vila ).

After that, the islands fell into oblivion again. They were taken over by France in the 18th century.

Vanuatu became independent on July 30, 1980. On August 30, 1983, Portugal established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Vanuatu.

On May 25, 1990 , a Portuguese ambassador in Vanuatu was accredited for the first time. José Luís Gomes , Portugal's ambassador in the Australian capital Canberra , thus became the first Portuguese chief diplomat for the Republic of Vanuatu.

diplomacy

Portugal is not present on Vanuatu with its own embassy , but is accredited there through its representation in Australia.

Vanuatu does not have its own embassy in Portugal either. The Vanuatu embassy in Brussels is responsible for all European countries.

Mutual consulates have also not been set up (as of 2016).

economy

There is hardly any bilateral trade. In 2014, Portugal delivered machines and equipment worth 8,000 euros to Vanuatu, while Portugal imported goods worth 2,000 euros from Vanuatu in 2012. In all other years between 2011 and 2015 there was no trade between countries.

When the new Portuguese ambassador Paulo Jorge Sousa da Cunha was accredited in Vanuatu in 2016 , the Vanuatu President Baldwin Lonsdale highlighted his country's interest in learning from Portugal's successful development in tourism. He also emphasized the common interest of both countries in the containment of climate change, with a view to Portugal's know-how in the field of renewable energies , from which Portugal already covers 64% of its energy needs and is therefore in the top group in Europe.
