The Palauo-Portuguese relations describe the interstate relationship between Palau and Portugal . The countries have direct diplomatic relations .

The relationships are problem-free, but poorly developed, due to the few common points of contact.

A citizen of Palau is registered in Portugal, on the island of Madeira (figures from 2016), while no Portuguese is registered in Palau (figures from 2005).

history

It is likely that the Portuguese seafarers did not come to the Pacific area of Palau, at least no documents are known according to which the islands were sighted. In any case, the region remained uninteresting for the Portuguese, since after the Treaty of Saragossa it fell mainly into the Spanish sphere, so that there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases here.

The Spaniard Ruy López de Villalobos discovered the islands in 1543 for Spain, which became German in 1899, Japanese in 1914, American in 1947 and finally independent in 1994.

In December 1994 Palau was admitted to the United Nations . This was the first time that Palau and Portugal belonged to a joint organization.

On August 19, 2000 , João Henrique Brito Câmara , the Portuguese ambassador to the Philippines , was the first representative of Portugal to be accredited in Palau .

diplomacy

Portugal neither has its own embassy in Palau, nor does Palau have a representation in Portugal. There are also no mutual consulates .

The Portuguese embassy in Australia is responsible for Palau, while Palau does not have any embassies in Europe.

economy

There is currently no countable trade between Palau and Portugal (as of the end of 2016). The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP shows in its statistics figures for all countries around the world with which Portugal trades without giving figures for Palau. The AICEP branch in the Australian capital Canberra is responsible .
