history

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Fiji, the highest authority for diplomacy in the country

The Portuguese cartographer and navigator Manuel Godinho de Erédia (1563–1623), who was born in Malacca , studied the region intensively. It is possible that he or Cristóvão de Mendonça (1475–1630) also passed the Fij Islands.

After Fiji's full independence in 1970 and the Portuguese Carnation Revolution in 1974, it took a few years before the two countries established direct, official contacts.

Fiji and Portugal first established diplomatic relations on February 21, 1977. Since then, the Portuguese ambassador to Australia's capital Canberra has been accredited in Fiji .

diplomacy

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Fiji, which is part of the administrative district of the Portuguese embassy in Australia .

Fiji does not have a representation in Portugal either, but is double-accredited there via its ambassador in Brussels .

There are also no mutual consulates .
