The New Zealand-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between New Zealand and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1976. Relations between the two countries are considered good and problem-free.

The two states are partners in a number of international organizations, including the various UN bodies , the International Criminal Court , the World Trade Organization and in the context of military cooperation and consultations between New Zealand and NATO .

The cornerstones of bilateral relations are the joint work in building the Republic of East Timor, which has been independent since 2002, and bilateral trade. In addition, the Portuguese were among the first European immigrants to New Zealand from the 19th century.

In New Zealand, 612 Portuguese are consularly registered (2014), while 45 New Zealanders are registered in Portugal (2015).

The Portuguese cartographer and navigator Manuel Godinho de Erédia (1563–1623), who was born in Malacca , studied the region intensively. His maps, which showed an unknown gold island ( Ilha do Ouro ) or Luca Antara and other islands all around, already suggest a more concrete Portuguese knowledge of Australia and its neighboring archipelagos before the arrival of the Dutchman Willem Jansz in 1606. Documented is a note from Erédias from 1601 on the specific existence and location of the Terra Australis . A concrete sighting of New Zealand by the Portuguese before the arrival of Abel Tasman in 1642 is not known.

From the 19th century, Europeans began to immigrate to New Zealand, due in particular to the emerging whaling . Portuguese were among those first immigrants to New Zealand.

In 2002 the former Portuguese colony of East Timor gained full independence. Since then, New Zealand, along with Australia and Portugal, has been one of the most important partner countries in building the young republic.

In 2007 New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters visited Portugal and met his counterpart Luís Amado there .

In 2013, the Portuguese State Secretary for Energy, Dr. Artur Trindade , the New Zealand Minister for Energy and Resources, Simon Bridges , on the sidelines of the Pacific Energy Summit in Auckland .

Portugal does not have its own embassy in New Zealand, which belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador in Canberra , Australia .

There are two Portuguese honorary consulates , in Mangere near Auckland and in the capital Wellington .

New Zealand also does not have its own representation in Portugal, but is double-accredited there with its ambassador in the French capital Paris .

New Zealand has a consulate in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon .

The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP does not have a branch in New Zealand; the AICEP office in Sydney, Australia is responsible .

In 2016, Portugal exported goods and services worth 25.3 million euros to New Zealand (2015: 25.8 million; 2014: 19.1 million; 2013: 16.0 million; 2012: 17.2 million .). Of the 17.8 million euros in goods, 18.7% were shoes, 13.9% plastics, 13.7% textiles, 11.2% machines and devices and 7.7% food.

In the same period, New Zealand delivered goods and services worth EUR 23.1 million to Portugal (2015: 20.2 million; 2014: 18.9 million; 2013: 17.1 million; 2012: 20.2 million .). Of the 22.7 million euros in goods, 86.5% were agricultural products, 5.2% textiles, 2.2% machines and devices, 1.6% chemical-pharmaceutical products and 1.3% food.

This put Portugal in 70th place among buyers and 55th among suppliers in New Zealand's foreign trade in goods, while New Zealand ranks 87th as buyer and 79th as supplier for Portuguese foreign trade.

In 2016, New Zealand tourists were responsible for 6.5 million euros in income for the Portuguese hotel industry (2015: 5.5 million; 2014: 5.6 million; 2013: 4.6 million; 2012: 6.0 million) ). They made up 0.05% of Portuguese tourism.

Around 1,000 Portuguese visit New Zealand every year.

The New Zealand selection puts the haka ahead of the Portuguese selection; New Zealand won the match on September 15, 2007 at the World Cup in France

Sports

In New Zealand's national sport, rugby union , the New Zealand national rugby union team and the Portuguese rugby selection have met once. New Zealand won the game in Group C at the 2007 World Cup in France.

In the Portuguese national sport of soccer , the Portuguese national soccer team and New Zealand's selection have not yet played against each other.

The Portuguese and New Zealand women's national teams (as of January 2017) met once, at the Algarve Cup 2016 the Portuguese lost 0: 1 to the guests from New Zealand.
