history

Portuguese sailors were the first Europeans to travel to the islands of Micronesia in the 16th century. However, they remained of no interest to the Portuguese, as they did not promise any significant trading centers and merchandise and, after the Treaty of Saragossa, fell mainly into the Spanish sphere, so that there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases here.

Micronesia was taken over by Spain in 1696 and sold to the German Empire in 1899. Japanese since World War I , it came under US administration after World War II . In 1990 the Federated States of Micronesia finally achieved full independence and in 1991 became a member of the UN , of which Portugal has been a member since 1955. This was the first time that the two countries belonged to a joint organization.

Micronesia and Portugal entered into diplomatic relations in 1996, but no Portuguese diplomat has yet been accredited there (as of March 2017). The Federated States of Micronesia belong to the administrative district of the Portuguese Embassy in Australia .

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Micronesia, the country belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador to Australia. Portuguese consulates do not exist in Micronesia either.

Micronesia also does not have its own representation in Portugal. The country does not have an embassy in Europe at all; its representative in the US capital Washington is responsible. There are also no Micronesian consulates in Europe.
