Portuguese-Tongan relations

The Portuguese-Tonga relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and Tonga . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1983. They have very few historical or current points of contact and therefore very weak bilateral relationships.

The history of the two countries did not cross each other significantly, despite their chronologically overlapping seafaring pasts.

The most important reason for the lack of interest of the Portuguese explorers of the 16th and 17th centuries, in addition to the lack of important trading centers, was the location of Tonga, which fell into the Spanish sphere after the Treaty of Saragossa . So there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases here.

After Tonga gained full independence in 1970 and the Portuguese Carnation Revolution in 1974, it took a few years for the two countries to establish official direct contacts.

On November 1, 1983, Portugal and Tonga first established diplomatic relations. Since then, the Portuguese ambassador to Australia's capital Canberra has been accredited in Tonga .

Tonga's representation in London is the country's only embassy in Europe

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Tonga, which is part of the administrative district of the Portuguese embassy in Australia .

Tonga also has no representation in Portugal. Tonga's only embassy in Europe is in London and is the Tongan contact point for all diplomatic issues in Europe.

There are also no mutual consulates .

economy

There is currently no countable trade between Portugal and Tonga. The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP shows in its statistics figures for all countries in the world with which Portugal trades, without giving figures for Tonga. The AICEP branch in the Australian metropolis of Sydney is responsible for Tonga.

Sports

In Tonga's national sport, rugby union , the Tongan national rugby union team and the Portuguese rugby selection have not yet met. Tonga took part in the 2015 U20 World Cup in Portugal.

In the Portuguese national sport football who Portuguese national football team and the selection of Tonga so far also have not played against each other, nor are the Portuguese and the Tongan Women's national teams (as of January 2017).

Up until now, athletes from both countries have usually only met at international events, especially the Olympic Games .
