The Portuguese-Tuvaluan relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Portugal and Tuvalu . The countries have not yet entered into direct diplomatic relations.

Neither Portuguese citizens in Tuvalu (2000 figures) nor Tuvalu citizens in Portugal (2015 figures) are registered.

history

The Spaniard Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra was the first European in the later island state of Tuvalu. It is possible that Portuguese seafarers also came to the Pacific area around Tuvalu in the 16th century , but no documents are known. In any case, the islands remained of no interest to the Portuguese, as they did not promise any important trading centers or commodities and, after the Treaty of Saragossa, fell mainly into the Spanish sphere, so that there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases there.

Tuvalu went largely unnoticed until the arrival of the American captain Arent Schuyler de Peyster in British service in 1819. The islands were visited by whalers in the 19th century , including probably Portuguese who were involved in Pacific whaling.

Tuvalu remained British property until independence in 1978. It was not until 2000 that Tuvalu, with a population of around 9,000, became a member of the UN , to which Portugal has been a member since 1955. This was the first time that the two countries belonged to a joint organization.

So far, Portugal and Tuvalu have not yet established any direct diplomatic relations (as of April 2017).

diplomacy

Portugal neither has its own embassy in Tuvalu, nor does Tuvalu have a representation in Portugal, as the countries have not yet entered into direct diplomatic relations. There are therefore no reciprocal consulates.

economy

There is currently no countable trade between Tuvalu and Portugal (as of the end of 2016). The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP shows in its statistics figures for all countries around the world with which Portugal does trade, without giving figures for Tuvalu. The AICEP branch in the Australian capital Canberra is responsible .
