The Nauru-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Nauru and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1984 . The relationships are problem-free, but very weak because there are hardly any points of contact.

Neither Portuguese citizens in Nauru (2005 figures) nor Naurus citizens in Portugal (2015 figures) are registered.

history

It is likely that the Portuguese seafarers did not come to the Pacific area around Nauru, at least no documents are known according to which the islands were sighted. In any case, the region remained of no interest to the Portuguese, as after the Treaty of Saragossa they fell mainly into the Spanish sphere, so that there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases here.

It was not until 1798 that the British were the first Europeans to sight the islands. Nauru remained in British, from 1888 German and from 1914 Australian possession until its independence in 1968.

In 1984 Nauru and Portugal established direct diplomatic relations.

In 1999 Nauru became a full member of the United Nations . This was the first time that Portugal and Nauru were partners in a joint organization.

Since then, the countries have neither opened mutual embassies, nor has a representative in the other country accredited .

diplomacy

Portugal neither has its own embassy in Nauru, nor is there a Naurus representation in Portugal. There are also no mutual consulates .

The Portuguese embassy in Australia is responsible for Nauru, while Nauru has no representation outside of Asia and Oceania.

economy

There is currently no countable trade between Nauru and Portugal (as of the end of 2016). The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce AICEP shows in its statistics figures for all countries around the world with which Portugal trades, without giving figures for Nauru. The AICEP branch in the Australian capital Canberra is responsible .
