The Kiribati-Portuguese relations describe the intergovernmental relationship between Kiribati and Portugal . The countries have had direct diplomatic relations since 1983.

Relations between the two countries are considered problem-free, but not very intensive, as there are no political, economic or cultural points of contact. Kiribati’s international relations are additionally hampered by its close ties with Taiwan . Kiribati and Portugal are both members of a number of international organizations, including the World Health Organization , UNESCO , the International Monetary Fund and various UN bodies .

Neither Portuguese citizens are registered in Kiribati (2005 figures) nor Kiribati citizens in Portugal (2015 figures).

history

The Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Queirós , who is in Spanish service, was the first European to travel to this region of the Pacific and the islands of Kiribati.

The region was of little interest to Portuguese explorers as it did not promise any major trading centers or goods. In addition, after the Treaty of Saragossa , the area fell into the Spanish sphere, so that there was no Portuguese motivation to set up their own bases here.

Kiribati achieved full independence from the United Kingdom in 1979 . On November 15, 1983, Kiribati and Portugal established direct diplomatic relations.

Portugal does not have its own embassy in Kiribati, the country belongs to the administrative district of the Portuguese ambassador in Canberra, Australia . Also consulates Portugal leads there none.

Kiribati also does not have its own representation in Portugal. The country has only three missions abroad (in Fiji, Taiwan and at the UN headquarters in New York). Kiribati consulates do not exist in Portugal either.
