The military airfield al-Jira or Jirah is a northern Syrian military airfield about 25 km east of Dair Hafir , Aleppo governorate , on trunk road 4, and a few km west of Lake Assad . The runway is 10,180 ft (approx. 3,100 m) long.
Prior to 2013, the airfield was mainly used as a training airfield for the Syrian Air Force . In February 2013, the military base with a handful of airworthy L-39 Albatros light ground attack and training aircraft fell into the hands of Ahrar al-Sham and the Free Syrian Army . In January 2014, the base fell to ISIS . In March 2017, the Syrian army sought to retake it .
