Aleppo ( Arabic حلب, Ḥalab ) is a Syrian governorate (محافظة, muḥāfaẓa ) in the northwest of the country on the border with Turkey . The Euphrates flows in the northeast of the province .

The largest city is Aleppo . There are also the cities of Al-Bab , Jarabulus , Afrin , A'zāz , Ain al-Arab and Manbidsch . The province is 18,500 km² and has about 3.1 million inhabitants (2005). Arabs and Kurds make up a large part of the population. Most of the Kurdish population lives on the border with Turkey .

The city of Aleppo occupies a special position, as it forms its own district as well as being the administrative center of Jabal Sem'an.
