Az-Zahra ' ( Arabic الزهراء, DMG az-Zahrāʾ 'The Shining One') is a city in northern Syria and part of the Aleppo governorate .
According to the Syrian Bureau of Statistics, az-Zahra 'had 13,780 inhabitants in 2004. Nearby cities are Tall Rifaat , Mayer in the northeast and Anadan in the south, with Nubl in the immediate northwest .

The majority of the population are twelve Shiites . Together with the neighboring Nubl, it forms a small Shiite enclave in the predominantly Sunni governorate of Aleppo.
Syrian civil war
From July 2012 on, az-Zahra 'and Nubl were surrounded by the Free Syrian Army (FSA). On February 3, 2016, the siege was ended by an offensive by the Syrian armed forces and Hezbollah , allied with them .
