Tartus ( Arabic مُحافظة طرطوس, DMG Muḥāfaẓat Ṭarṭūs ) is one of the 14 Syrian governorates and is located in the west of the country on the border with Lebanon . In the west the governorate borders on the Mediterranean Sea . Around 785,000 people live in an area of ​​1,890 km² (2010 estimate). The capital of the governorate is Tartus .
