List of governorates of Syria
The list of governorates of Syria represents the division of Syria into 14 governorates ( Arabic محافظات, DMG muḥāfaẓāt , singularمحافظة / muḥāfaẓa ).
The governorates of Rif Dimaschq and Homs (both eastern parts ) and, above all, Deir ez-Zor have shares in the Syrian Desert ; further desert areas are in the governorates of ar-Raqqa and al-Hasakah.

The Quneitra Governorate (Quneitra) on the Golan Heights is largely since 1967 by Israel occupied the area from as part of its since 1981 North district managed. The region around Iskenderun (Alexandretta), to the inclusion in the Turkey Sanjak of Alexandretta , belongs since 1939 with Turkey, but is also claimed by Syria.
In the course of the civil war in Syria , three autonomous cantons were founded , mainly inhabited by Kurds. In 2015, the Syrian government lost control of two governorates and their capitals (ar-Raqqa and Idlib) to Islamist groups ( Islamic State , al-Nusra Front ).
