Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota (* thirtieth October 1993 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He was selected second in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans . From 2012 to 2014 he played college football at the University of Oregon , during which time he won the Alamo Bowl (2013), the Rose Bowl (2014) and the Heisman Trophy . He has been playing for the Las Vegas Raiders since 2020 .

Early years

Mariota is of Samoan descent and was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. He attended St. Louis High School in Honolulu, where he was appointed starting quarterback in his senior year and led St. Louis to the state championship with eleven wins and one loss. He reached 2,597 yards and 32 touchdowns in passing that year and ran the ball for an additional 455 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was also a very good athlete . He also qualified in sprint and jumping disciplines for the state championships, where he reached fourth place in the 200-meter run and long jump. In the 4 x 100 meter relay , he won the title with his team.

In 2010, before he had played a first-team game in his high school, the hitherto unknown Mariota attended a football camp in Oregon , where he was noticed by the University of Oregon Offensive Coordinator and then during the pre-season in Hawaii watched. Shortly afterwards, before his first game as a starting quarterback, he received a scholarship, which he accepted after the season.

college

After skipping the 2011 season, he became the first freshman to start the opening game for the Oregon Ducks in 22 years in 2012 . He then led his team to 36 wins and five losses in three years. As a junior , he stood with his team after a victory over the Florida State Seminoles led by Jameis Winston in the finals of the College Football Championships. However, this was lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes . Nevertheless, he was the first player from his university and the first player with Hawaiian roots to be chosen as the Heisman Trophy winner. After the season, he announced that he would be participating in the 2015 NFL Draft , despite the opportunity to play another year of college football .

NFL

Mariota was selected second by the Tennessee Titans in the 2015 NFL Draft . In his NFL debut on September 13, 2015 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , he threw four touchdowns in the first half. He finished the game with the maximum possible quarterback rating of 158.3, making him the first player in NFL history to do so on his NFL debut. In addition, Mariota was also the youngest quarterback in the NFL at the age of 21 years and 318 days, who received a quarterback rating of 158.3. He scored an 87-yard touchdown against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Matchday 12, and a week later caught a pass from running back Antonio Andrews against the New York Jets and ran it over 40 yards for a touchdown into the end zone. This makes him the only quarterback with Kordell Stewart who managed to run and catch a touchdown over at least forty yards.

From his NFL debut, apart from injuries, he was starting quarterback until week 6 of the 2019 NFL season . At this point, he lost his regular seat to Ryan Tannehill due to his performance . The rest of the season he was only substituted for a few snaps.

After his contract in Tennessee expired, Mariota joined the Las Vegas Raiders , where he is scheduled as a backup of Derek Carr .
