Lamar Demeatrice Jackson Jr. (born January 7, 1997 in Pompano Beach , Florida ) is an American quarterback who currently plays for the Baltimore Ravens in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Louisville and was a winner of the Heisman Trophy . In the NFL, Jackson was voted MVP in his sophomore year .

college

Lamar Jackson played for three years, from 2015 to 2017, at the University of Louisville for the Louisville Cardinals as a quarterback. In his freshman year in college, he played passes for 1,840 yards of space, scoring 12 touchdowns in 8 interceptions and 960 yards for his team. Jackson made his breakthrough in 2016, his sophomore year of college. He threw 3,543 yards and 30 touchdowns with 9 interceptions in 13 games. What made his game stand out was the ability not only to throw the ball but also to run. So Jackson ran an additional 1,571 yards and 21 touchdowns. This made him the ten-best runner by yards and the fifth-best runner by touchdowns in the NCAA 2016, only running backs who mainly concentrate on running were better placed . Jackson received many awards for his achievements in the 2016 season, especially the Heisman Trophy . In his senior year at college, Jackson was able to confirm his achievements of the previous year, scoring 3,660 yards and 27 touchdowns through the air and 1,601 yards and 18 touchdowns through the run, but Jackson did not receive multiple awards again, but this was due to the outstanding performance of quarterback Baker Mayfield . In the Heisman Trophy Voting 2017 Jackson finished third behind Mayfield (1st place) and running back Bryce Love (2nd place). Jackson was named ACC Athlete of the Year for all sports in 2018 and was honored with the women's winner, Arike Ogunbowale of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Basketball.

NFL

2018

Lamar Jackson was selected 32nd by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft . Jackson was drafted as fifth quarterback in 2018, with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold , Josh Allen and Josh Rosen selected before him . Lamar Jackson signed a four-year contract for 9,471,648 at the Ravens dollars . Jackson started the season as a backup quarterback behind Joe Flacco and won the battle for the backup position against Robert Griffin III . Although he only went into his rookie season as number 2 , Jackson made his debut in the first week against the Buffalo Bills and got playing times in the weeks that followed. Jackson's stakes can be traced back to the fact that the Ravens sent Flacco and Jackson together on selected moves or used Jackson as a runner. He scored his first touchdown through the run in the seventh week and the first touchdown through the air in the eighth week of the 2018 season . Due to an injury to Flacco, Jackson played as a starter for the first time in week 11. Jackson won his first two games as a starter with the Ravens. He finished the season with 1,201 yards of space gained with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions through the pass and also ran 695 yards of space and 5 touchdowns for the Ravens.

With the Baltimore Ravens first in the AFC North , Jackson became the youngest starting quarterback in a play-off game the day before his 22nd birthday. In this game the Ravens lost to the Los Angeles Chargers with 17:23. Jackson made just under half of his passes in this game and threw two touchdowns, he also caused four turnovers , he threw an interception and fumbled the ball three times.

2019

Before the 2019 season , the Ravens swapped their longtime starting quarterback, Joe Flacco, with whom they had won Super Bowl XLVII , to the Denver Broncos , with Jackson leading the team in the future. In the 59-10 win in the opening game against the Miami Dolphins , the Ravens under Jackson set new franchise records for most points, highest win and most yards of space in a game. In addition, Jackson, who threw five touchdown passes, became the youngest NFL player to achieve the highest possible quarterback rating in a game with 158.3 . Overall, Jackson delivered an outstanding season and, in addition to his well-known strength in the running game, was also able to show that he had matured as a passer. While he landed with 3,127 yards of space in the lower midfield of the league, Jackson was able to lead the league with 36 touchdowns through the pass and also had the best touchdown rate of all quarterbacks in the 2019 season. The 36 touchdowns were countered by only 6 interceptions. In addition to the strong passing game, Jackson's outstanding running game made it unique and particularly valuable to the Ravens. In his 15 appearances during the regular season Jackson ran 1,206 yards and was able to score seven more touchdowns for his team over the run. Here he was able to set up by far the best value with 6.9 yards of space gain per attempt and only five running backs, who are positionally intended for the running game, were able to gain more yards of space over the entire season. Jackson is the second quarterback with more than 1,000 yards of rushing in one season and replaced Michael Vick , who ran 1,039 yards for his Atlanta Falcons in 2006 , as the best running season of a quarterback after gaining space. Jackson also set a new record together with his running backs, Mark Ingram junior and Gus Edwards . With 3,296 rushing yards as a team in one season, they broke the record of the New England Patriots from the 1978 season, which at that time were able to gain 3,165 yards of space as a team.

With the Ravens Jackson won their division and thus reached the play-offs for the second time in his career. However, Jackson lost his team's first game in the play-offs in 2019, this season in the Divisional Round against the Tennessee Titans with 28:12. Jackson was elected to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career for his regular season accomplishments . Here he received the most votes of all NFL players from the fans for the Pro Bowl 2020 . At the end of the season he was elected MVP 2019 , this award is given to the most valuable player of the regular season at the end of each season. What was special about his choice was that he was only the second player to be unanimously voted MVP after Tom Brady (2010).

2020

Jackson was on the cover of Electronic Arts ' Madden 21 video game , which was the officially licensed sports game for the 2020 NFL season .
