NFL

Draft

Baker Mayfield was surprisingly selected first by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft . In most mock drafts , the experts were more likely to expect the Browns to pick Sam Darnold with their first pick. Mayfield's comparatively small size was also seen as a potential problem for him in the NFL.

Cleveland Browns (since 2018)

Baker Mayfield chose jersey number 6 for the Browns after the draft, which he wore during his college career. He signed a four-year contract with the Browns 32,682,980 US dollars . Coach Hue Jackson decided during the offseason that Mayfield would start his rookie season (2018) as a backup behind Tyrod Taylor .
Mayfield made his NFL debut against the New York Jets on September 20, 2018, replacing Taylor, who suffered a concussion in-game . He led the Browns to their first NFL win in 21 months and also caught a two-point conversion for his team in the third quarter. On the Monday after the game, Hue Jackson appointed Mayfield as starting quarterback. Mayfield made his debut as a starter in week 4 against the Oakland Raiders , the game was just lost in overtime . Mayfield threw in this game passes for 295 yards and here 2 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. In his first win as a starter (12: 9 against the Baltimore Ravens in overtime) he threw for 342 yards of space and a touchdown. Fluctuating, but also other strong performances followed; so in week 10 (28:16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons ) he gained 216 yards of space and three touchdowns (no interception), a quarterback rating of 151.2 and thus the highest that a rookie quarterback has ever achieved with at least 20 pass attempts could achieve.

At the end of the season, in which the Browns were able to achieve their best result since 2007 despite the 7: 9 negative record, Mayfield was one of the nominees for the NFL Rookie of the Year Award (best newcomer of the year). He could not win the trophy, however, the award went to running back Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants .
