Matthew Stephen "Matt" Leinart (* 11. May 1983 in Santa Ana , California ) is a former American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He played college football for the University of Southern California and won the 2004 Heisman Trophy . He then played for the Arizona Cardinals , Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Leinart played from 2001 to 2005 for the University of Southern California (USC) under Head Coach Pete Carroll in NCAA college football . On January 1, 2004, he won the Rose Bowl with his USC Trojans against the Michigan Wolverines and was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the game.

On January 4, 2005, Leinart was able to win another title with the Trojans. He triumphed against the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS National Championship Game , played that year at the Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami . Once again, Leinart was elected MVP and received the Heisman Trophy for the first time at the end of the season .

In 2006, the Trojans qualified again for the BCS Championship Game, this time at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena . But Leinart could not lead the Trojans to victory again. To the Texas Longhorns , Leinart lost his second of 39 college games.

NFL

Leinart was selected tenth in the first round in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals . In his rookie season he ousted the then starting quarterback Kurt Warner and was himself starting quarterback for the Cardinals. In season 2007, Leinart broke in the fourth game season the collarbone and could the rest of the season are no longer used.

At the beginning of the 2008 season, Kurt Warner recaptured Leinart's starting job and pushed him back to the bench. Warner even led the Cardinals to the Super Bowl , where they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers .

In 2009, Leinart only saw the field from the bench, as Warner again played superbly and again led the Cardinals into the play-offs , where they failed in the second round to the later Super Bowl winners New Orleans Saints .

On September 4, 2010, the Arizona Cardinals announced they would unilaterally end Leinart's contract. Two days later he signed a contract with the Houston Texans and became third quarterback behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky .

On May 1, 2012, Leinart signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders and was scheduled to replace his former college football teammate Carson Palmer . After this injured himself on the 16th matchday, Leinart and the third quarterback Terrell Pryor shared the operating times. Ultimately, however, Pryor prevailed and Leinart's contract was terminated after the season.

In August 2013, Leinart was signed by the Buffalo Bills after the injuries of their quarterbacks EJ Manuel and Kevin Kolb . Leinart and Thad Lewis should compete for fourth quarterback position behind Jeff Tuel . Lewis prevailed and Leinart was released after five days.
