NFL season
|
The 2012 NFL season , the 93rd season of the National Football League , began on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, with the game of last year's Super Bowl XLVI winners , the New York Giants , against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium and ended with the Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, February 3, 2013, in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans .
New Orleans Saints scandal
In the summer of 2012, an illegal black box office belonging to the New Orleans Saints was exposed, which was used to reward fouls on opposing players with a bounty (German: premium). The focus was on head coach Sean Payton , defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and linebacker Jonathan Vilma . In this "Bountygate" scandal, the NFL cracked down and punished the Saints with the following measures:
- Williams was banned "indefinitely"
- Payton was banned for the entire 2012 season
- Vilma was banned for the entire 2012 season
- Various assistant coaches and players were banned from playing several games
- Half a million dollars fine
- Loss of second-round draft picks for the 2012 and 2013 seasons
The scandal hit the Saints particularly hard, as they would have played in their own stadium if they had made it to the Super Bowl .
Referee lockout
The start of the season was overshadowed by a lockout of the NFL referees who were demanding higher wages. By the 3rd match day, they were replaced by referees from other leagues and lower-class college football leagues whose mixed performances caused displeasure. The climax of the controversy was the controversial touchdown on the last play of wide-receiver Golden Tate , the 14:12 win of the Seattle Seahawks against the Green Bay Packers , in which Tate illegally knocked the cornerback of the Packers, Sam Shields, to the ground. Also, both Tate and Packers safety MD Jennings caught the ball at the same time. While the foul, if it had been seen that way, would have ended the game immediately, in the case of a simultaneous catch , the ball is considered caught for the offense and was therefore to be assessed as a touchdown. The game was stopped for video evidence (instant replay), but according to NFL rules it was only allowed to check whether the ball was caught by both players (as decided in the game) and whether it was not touching the ground. The overlooked foul, however, was no longer verifiable. According to the scene, the referee decided on "Touchdown for Seattle".
In an official statement, the NFL admitted the wrong decision. As a result, the regular referees were able to accept an improved offer from the NFL and were greeted with standing ovations by the fans in the next game .
NFL draft
The 2012 NFL Draft took place April 26-28 at Radio City Music Hall in New York . A total of 253 players were selected in seven rounds during the draft. Since the Indianapolis Colts had the worst record in the past 2011 season, they had the right to select the first player in the draft. As previously announced, they chose quarterback Andrew Luck from Stanford University with the first round pick . Since there were five rookie quarterbacks as starters at the beginning of the season (Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III , Ryan Tannehill , Brandon Weeden and Russell Wilson ), which had never happened since the NFL and AFL merged in 1970 , the year can be placed in the position of Classify quarterbacks as very strong. This trend was underlined with rookie quarterbacks Nick Foles , Kirk Cousins and Ryan Lindley , who also made their debut during the season. The other quarterbacks Brock Osweiler , who was selected in the second round, and Austin Davis , Case Keenum and Kellen Moore , who were undrafted with different teams, also made their debut in a later season.
Rule changes
- The overtime rule for the postseason (introduced for the 2010 season ) will be extended to the preseason and regular season . In contrast to the Sudden Victory Overtime that has been used so far , the game continues after a field goal is scored by the team in possession of the coin after the coin toss (but if the team attacking first scores a touchdown or the defense scores a safety , the game ends immediately as before and the Team that scored the points wins). If the opposing team then scores a touchdown, that team is the winner. If the game is still a draw, there is another sudden death and every point win leads to victory. If the game is still a tie at the end of stoppage time, the game will end as a tie.
- The first regular season game to use the new overtime rules was the first week game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings . Minnesota kicked off overtime and scored a field goal in the drive. Then she stopped Jacksonville at the 4th Down and won the game.
- The first regular season game in which both teams scored a field goal in overtime in their first drive was the game in the eleventh week between the Jaguars and the Houston Texans . The Texans won the game 43:37, becoming the first NFL team to score twice in stoppage time thanks to the new rules.
- The official game observers ( replay booth ) can arrange re-meetings of moves with turnovers at any time during the game , similar to the rule adopted in 2011 on moves with point wins, which are also all checked and confirmed or doubted by the official game observers. The penalty for throwing the challenge flag and the resulting "incontestable" moves have also been changed: In addition to the 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike behavior (game delay), the Replay Booth will automatically confirm the current call. The review cannot be repeated. However, this part of the rule was repealed before the 2013 season .
- The video evidence ( instant replay ) is extended for the following turnover situations:
- if a ball is fumbled , then picked up again and the referees have decided to runner out of bounds
- if the referees have decided on "incomplete forward pass" after a backward pass has been played and the opposing team has taken the backward pass after the turnover
- Players stopped by a crack-back block are now considered defenseless players.
- Last names on uniforms can now contain suffixes as generational names such as Roman numerals (in the case of Robert Griffin III ), Junior (Jr.) and Senior (Sr.).
On August 30, 2012, the owners and the NFLPA approved additional changes such as: For example, teams can designate a player who was placed on the injured reserve list prior to the start of the season and who can return to the 53-man squad later in the season to play again. That player is entitled to return to training after the sixth week and to the game after the eighth week.
Regular season
The regular season was characterized by great balance. For the first time since 2008 , no team managed to win at least 14 of the 16 games of the season, but there were twelve teams with at least ten wins. The two teams with the best record of the season (13 wins each) were the Atlanta Falcons and the Denver Broncos . Two returnees made a name for themselves: Denver's new starting quarterback Peyton Manning , who returned to the league after a year injury break, contributed 4,659 yards of space and 37 touchdowns with only 16 interceptions to the good season of the Broncos. At the Minnesota Vikings , running back Adrian Peterson , who suffered a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of the 2011 season, missed the record for most run yards in a season by Eric Dickerson (2,105 yards) by just nine yards.
The good game of several rookie quarterbacks was also noticeable: Number one draft pick Andrew Luck (4,374 yards gain, 23 touchdowns at 18 interceptions) led the Indianapolis Colts straight into the play-offs , just like the number two -Draft pick Robert Griffin III (3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns with 5 interceptions and election to the Pro Bowl ) the Washington Redskins and the 75th drafted Russell Wilson (3,110 yards, 26 touchdowns with 10 interceptions and election to the Pro Bowl ) the Seattle Seahawks . Quarterback Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers also surprised , who replaced Alex Smith as starting quarterback in his second NFL year in the middle of the season and recorded 1,849 yards and ten touchdowns in three interceptions in just seven games from the start. Kaepernick was also involved in a remarkable game by his 49ers against the St. Louis Rams : it ended 24:24 after extra time, the first draw in the NFL since 2008 .
The 256 games were played in 17 game weeks, with each team playing 16 games and a game-free week ( bye week ) between the fourth and the twelfth week. Seventeen games were played as Monday Night Game , two of which were double headers in the first week. On the last weekend all games took place on Sunday. There were also 13 games on Thursday night, starting with the game in the second game week and three games on Thanksgiving . Due to the Democrats' convention , held in early September, at which they chose their presidential candidate for the 2012 election, the NFL moved the opening game forward one day to Wednesday, September 5th. In the 16 games of the 17th week on December 30, 2012, all teams met - as has been the case since 2010 - against an opponent from their division.
Game in Europe
As in previous years, a regular season game took place as part of the NFL International Series in Europe. In week 8 of the game, the New England Patriots met the St. Louis Rams at London's Wembley Stadium . The Patriots prevailed 45: 7.

The 47th edition of the Super Bowl took place on February 3, 2013 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans . In the duel between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens , the Ravens got the upper hand with 34:31 and celebrated their second championship. With John and Jim Harbaugh , two brothers contested a Super Bowl as head coaches for the first time , which is why the Super Bowl XLVII was also colloquially known as "Brother Bowl", "HarBowl" or "Harbaugh Bowl".
