He played college football for Purdue University and was selected in the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers in the second round. Since 2006 he has played for the New Orleans Saints in the National Football League (NFL), with whom he won the Super Bowl XLIV .

Career

college

From 1997 to 2000, Brees played college football . He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette , Indiana , and played there for the Purdue Boilermakers in the NCAA Division I-AA.

After it was rarely used as a backup in the first year, it made the breakthrough in 1998 and set numerous records in the following years. He was twice a finalist in the Heisman Trophy election , won the Maxwell Award in 2000 and was twice Offensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten Conference . He graduated in industrial management.

Overall, he came in the four years on 1026 successful passes in 1678 pass attempts and 11,729 yards and 90 thrown touchdowns in 45 interceptions . He was able to achieve 14 more touchdowns in the running game .

NFL

San Diego Chargers

Drew Brees was selected in the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers as the first player in the second round in a total of 32nd place and was provided as a backup behind Doug Flutie . As the worst team of the 2000 season , the Chargers originally had the right to select the first overall. Since they are but with their desire player, quarterback Michael Vick of Virginia Tech , could not agree on a contract, they traded their franchise to the Atlanta Falcons . In the end, the Falcons picked Vick first overall , while the Chargers chose running back LaDainian Tomlinson instead in the first round . It wasn't until the second round that the Chargers took Brees, a quarterback, who was to become the future quarterback of the franchise instead of Vick.

In his first season, Brees was only used in one game, bringing 15 of 27 passes for 221 yards to their destination. For the 2002 season , Brees was determined by coach Marty Schottenheimer as the new starting quarterback . In his first season as a starter, Brees made 60.8% successful passes in 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. With a record of 8 wins and 8 losses, the Chargers had improved significantly compared to 5-11 in the previous year, so that Brees went into the following season as a starter. However, he was unable to match his previous season performance, and of the first eight games in which Brees came to a quarterback rating of only 63.7, the Chargers could only win one. Thereupon Brees had to vacate his place as playmaker again for Flutie, under which, however, there was no success. Therefore, Brees came back to use in the last three games of the season, in which he could still not convince.

Because of the poor performance of Brees, the Chargers, who again had the first right to vote in the 2004 draft, decided to choose a new quarterback. Eli Manning , elected first overall , did not want to play in San Diego, so the Chargers swapped him for Philip Rivers , who was elected fourth by the New York Giants . Since the contract negotiations with Rivers dragged on until shortly before the start of the 2004 season, Brees went back into the season as starting quarterback. Brees was able to convince and led the Chargers with 27 touchdowns in seven interceptions and 65.5% successful passes into the play-offs . For his performance, Brees was awarded the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award and he was first appointed to the Pro Bowl . In his first play-off game, Brees lost to the New York Jets with the Chargers at 17:20 after overtime.

At the end of the 2004 season, the Brees contract ran out and the Chargers put the franchise tag on it . Brees was able to prevail against Rivers and played a good season, but not quite as well as last year. Due to a drop in performance in the last four games, the Chargers narrowly missed the play-offs with a balance of 9–7. In the last game of the season, Brees sustained a serious shoulder injury that threatened his career. As a result, the Chargers offered him a new contract, the payment of which depended heavily on his performance and guaranteed him little money. So Brees looked around for a new team, with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints showing particular interest. After the Dolphins signed Culpepper instead of Brees Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings , Brees agreed with the Saints on a six-year contract for 60 million US dollars, of which he was guaranteed ten million for the first season.

New Orleans Saints

Under new head coach Sean Payton , Brees led the Saints into the play-offs with ten wins and six losses. There they were able to win the first game against the Philadelphia Eagles and advanced into the NFC Championship Game , in which they were defeated by the Chicago Bears . With 4,418 yards of space gained by his passes, he led the league. He was also third at the end of the season with 26 touchdown passes and a quarterback rating of 96.2. In the next two years, Brees threw for over 4,400 yards each and had the best pass rate in the NFL, but since the rest of the Saints team was weak, the Saints missed the play-offs in both years. In 2008, Brees received the NFL Offensive Player of the Year Award . With 5,069 yards of space gained in the passing game, he came as the second player in NFL history over the 5,000-yard mark and missed Dan Marino's record by only 15 yards.

In the Saints' first game in the 2009 season against the Detroit Lions , Brees equalized with six touchdown passes in one game the franchise record of Billy Kilmer from 1969. The Saints won the game with 45-27. In Monday's week 12 game against the New England Patriots , Brees made 18 of 23 passes for 371 yards and threw five touchdowns, giving him the best possible quarterback rating of 158.3. Brees gained 16.1 yards of space per pass, something that no quarterback had succeeded in doing since the 1970s (with over 20 attempts to pass). It was the eleventh victory of the Saints in the eleventh game. After the Saints recorded 13 wins after the thirteenth game, they lost the last three games of the regular season, but still moved into the play-offs as the best team in the NFC . In the regular season, 70.62% of Brees' passes were successful, setting a new record in the NFL.

Brees after winning the Super Bowl with his son Baylen

With a 45:14 win over the Arizona Cardinals in the Divisional Round and a 31:28 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game , Brees led the Saints to their first Super Bowl participation. The Saints won Super Bowl XLIV in Miami with 31:17 against the Indianapolis Colts . Brees threw 32 successful passes in 39 attempts for 288 yards and two touchdowns and was named the Super Bowl MVP . The magazine Sports Illustrated chose him because of the Super Bowl victory and his charitable assistance for the reconstruction of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 2010, as did the Associated Press .

In the 2010 season , Brees deteriorated slightly compared to the previous year. He threw for 4,620 yards and 33 touchdowns at 22 interceptions, more interceptions than in any other season. Still, he continued to be the league's most accurate quarterback with 68.1% successful passes. The Saints qualified for the play-offs with 11 wins and five losses. In the wild card round, however, they were eliminated against the Seattle Seahawks in a tight game that became famous through the move Beast Quake .

On December 26, 2011 he broke in the 15th game of the regular season (in week 16 of 17) the record held by Dan Marino since 1984 for thrown yards in one season. Brees scored a total of 5,476 yards in the 2011 season. His record was beaten by one yard in the 2013 season by Peyton Manning . With a pass rate of 71.2 percent, Brees was able to improve his own record again, with a quarterback rating of 110.6 he set a personal record. In the postseason, the Saints made it to the Divisional Round, in which they were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers . Brees was named AP Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career . In the NFL Top 100 , which is determined by polls among the NFL players, Brees took second place.

On July 13, 2012, Brees and the Saints agreed on a new contract until 2017, which guaranteed the quarterback at least 60 million US dollars and in the best case could even bring 100 million US dollars. That made Brees the highest-paid player in NFL history until Joe Flacco received a higher-paying contract from the Baltimore Ravens the following year.

On September 30, 2012 Brees succeeded in a 27:28 loss to the Green Bay Packers, setting the record of Johnny Unitas with 47 consecutive games with at least one touchdown thrown . In these 47 games he made 114 touchdown passes, Unitas was successful 102 times. Brees threw an average of 18 yards, Unitas for an average of 25.5 yards. Against his former team, the San Diego Chargers , Brees was finally able to break the record. The series ended after 54 games in a row with at least one thrown touchdown in the 13:23 defeat on the 13th match day of the 2012 season against the Atlanta Falcons . Brees threw five interceptions and no touchdown.

On the eighth day of the 2015 season , Brees threw seven touchdown passes in a 52:49 win over the New York Giants , setting an NFL record for the most touchdown passes in a game. In the 2015 season, Brees threw the most yards in the league.

In the 2017 season , Brees set another record for the best pass rate in the NFL with 72.0 percent successful passes, which he set himself again in 2018 with 74.4%.

Before the 2018 season , Brees signed a new two-year contract with the Saints that guarantees him $ 27 million, which can be increased to up to 50 million through bonus payments. On October 8, 2018, Brees broke Peyton Manning's record for most yards thrown (71,940) with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre'Quan Smith in the Saints' 43:19 win over Washington Redskins . In the game against the Baltimore Ravens on October 21, 2018, he threw his 500th touchdown and won with the Saints. After Peyton Manning and Brett Favre, he is one of three quarterbacks who have won against all 32 franchises and one of four quarterbacks that have exceeded the 500 touchdown mark.

On the 2nd match day of the 2019 season, Brees tore a ligament in his right thumb and had to be replaced. He was out for several weeks and had to undergo an operation. He made his comeback in week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals , against whom he threw in a 31-9 win for 373 yards and three touchdowns in an interception. Brees set Peyton Manning's record for the most touchdown passes thrown (539) in a 34-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15 .

In March 2020, Brees and the Saints signed a two-season deal that promises Brees a salary of $ 25 million.
