William Chase Daniel (* 7. October 1986 in Irving , Texas ) is an American American football poker players at the position of quarterback . He plays for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). With the New Orleans Saints , he won Super Bowl XLIV . Daniel played college football for the Mizzou Tigers of the University of Missouri .

Early years

Chase Daniel was born on October 7, 1986 in Irving, Texas to Bill and Vickie Daniel. He played American football at Southlake , Texas High School and led his team to a 2004 record of 16 straight wins, which meant winning the state championship. In his last two years, he led the team to 31 wins in 32 games. He threw passes for 4,617 yards and 49 touchdowns in 14 interceptions in his last season . In the running game he scored 1,425 yards and another 21 touchdowns. After playing quarterback as a freshman , he completed his sophomore season in high school as a wide receiver .

Despite his successes, the University of Texas (which Daniel wanted to move to) wasn't particularly interested in him because of his small size. When one of the two favorites of the Longhorns for the position of quarterback, Ryan Perrilloux ( Colt McCoy was the second, who then moved to the Texas Longhorns and became their starter in 2006), decided at short notice for the Louisiana State University , Daniel stayed with his Acceptance for the University of Missouri.

college

At the University of Missouri , Chase Daniel started out as backup quarterback Brad Smith . However, he was used by his coaches as often as possible in preparation for the coming seasons and was used as a freshman in ten games - including the bowl game against the University of South Carolina . For the 2006 season he became the starting quarterback after Smith's departure , and in his first season as a starter he set new records for gaining space in the passing game (3,526 yards - the old record of 2,436 yards was from 1992) and touchdown passes (28 - old record of 18 touchdowns from 1969). In the bowl game loss to Oregon State University , he threw passes for 330 yards (a new school record in a bowl game) and two touchdowns, at an average of 20.6 yards per pass caught.

The junior season went even better for Daniel than his sophomore year in college. He threw passes over 300 yards in 8 of 13 games. He had a run of 254 passes without interception, which was a new record in the Big 12 Conference and only missed a new NCAA record by 17 passes . The school record of 56 touchdowns (Brad Smith), he broke in a game against Texas A&M University with four touchdowns, which he already came to 59. At the end of the season he had scored a total of 62 touchdowns (the 33 this season broke his season record from the previous year as well as his 4,170 yards of space gained in the passing game) for the Mizzou Tigers. He was named Offensive Player of the Year for the Big 12 Conference - the first ever University of Missouri player. In the election for the Heisman Trophy he was 4th (behind Tim Tebow , Darren McFadden and Colt Brennan ).

At the end of his college career, Daniel was able to have another good season in his senior season as in the previous year. He improved his records from last year (4,335 yards of space gained and 39 touchdowns in passing) and also broke Brad Smith's school record for space in passing in the game against Oklahoma University (end of season / career 13,485 - Smith: 13,088).

NFL

The assessments of Daniel's potential in the run-up to the NFL Draft 2009 varied widely. Some experts considered him to be one of the better quarterbacks in the draft, but - as with college recruitment - there were great doubts about his small size. Added to this were concerns about how his good statistical values from a spread offense in college would now be reflected in the NFL.

Washington Redskins

Chase Daniel was not selected in the draft and signed a contract with the Washington Redskins as a free agent after the draft weekend . But before the beginning of the regular season he was released again and the Redskins started the season with only two quarterbacks ( Jason Campbell and Todd Collins ). Although another quarterback, Colt Brennan (3rd in the 2007 Heisman Trophy election), injured himself so badly that he was put on the Injured Reserve List , Daniel didn't even make it into the Redskins Practice Squad .

New Orleans Saints

After his release from the Redskins, Chase Daniel was accepted by the New Orleans Saints as 3rd quarterback and released and reinstated several times during the first year. He was no longer used in the 2009 season with the Saints. So he was in the squad when the Saints won Super Bowl XLIV , but was not used in the regular season , in the play-offs and in the Super Bowl . In the following two seasons he was - after the dismissal of Patrick Ramsey - backup of quarterback Drew Brees .

Kansas City Chiefs

In March 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs signed Chase Daniel as backup quarterback for Alex Smith . He signed a three-year contract for 10 million dollars . Daniel played two games as a starter for the Chiefs - in the 2013 and 2014 seasons in week 17 against the San Diego Chargers . The Chiefs lost his first game from the start with 24:27 after overtime. Daniel made 21 of 30 passes for 200 yards and scored a touchdown . In addition , he ran 59 yards in 7 attempts. In the 2014 game, the Chiefs won 19: 7, causing the Chargers to miss the play-offs. In that game, Chase Daniel made 16 of 27 passes for 157 yards and ran 16 yards in 3 tries.

Philadelphia Eagles

After another year with the Chiefs, Daniel signed a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2016 . Originally designed as backup of Sam Bradford hired Daniel but was released after only one year after the Eagles Nick Foles as a backup of the new starter Carson Wentz ( drafted in May 2016) dedicated.

New Orleans Saints

After Daniel was released from the Eagles, he signed a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints in late March 2017 and was back up to quarterback Drew Brees after four years .

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears signed Chase Daniel on a two-year contract as backup for Mitch Trubisky in March 2018 .

Detroit Lions

In March 2020, Daniel agreed on a three-year contract with the Detroit Lions , where he is slated to back up Matt Stafford .

Six feet was fine in a spread system, where the big gaps in the offensive line gave Daniel plenty of opportunity to throw the ball and see downfield. But in the NFL there wouldn't be gaps, and the linemen rushing at him would be six-five, not six-one. “I wonder,” Shonka went on. “Can he see? Can he be productive in a new kind of offense? How will he handle that? I'd like to see him set up quickly from center. I'd like to see his ability to read coverages that are not in the spread. I'd like to see him in the pocket. I'd like to see him move his feet. I'd like to see him do a deep dig, or deep comeback. You know, like a throw twenty to twenty-five yards down the field. "
