Irving is a city in Dallas County , in the state of Texas , United States . It is the headquarters of the ExxonMobil oil company . The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is located in part of the city .

The city is located in northern Texas about 20 kilometers from Dallas . The urban area has an area of 175.3 square kilometers. Of this, 174.1 square kilometers (99.35 percent) are land and 1.1 square kilometers (0.65 percent) are water.

The history of the place began in 1889 under the name Gorbit , in 1894 it was renamed Kit . In 1903, Irving was founded by JO "Otto" Schulze and Otis Brown and was probably named after the writer Washington Irving (1783-1859), Netta Barcus Brown's favorite author . Irving received parish status on April 14, 1914, with Otis Braun as first mayor. At the end of the 19th century there were several churches, two egrenier machines (machines for ginning cotton), a blacksmith and a retail store in the village .
The first school opened in 1909. The population grew very slowly. In 1925 the place had 357 inhabitants. Growth accelerated in the 1930s. 1956 opened the University of Dallas at Irving. At the beginning of the 1960s there were numerous production facilities, banks and shops, and the population rose to 45,000. In 1971, Texas Stadium , home to the Dallas Cowboys , an American football team from the National Football League (NFL), was completed. At the 1990 census, 155,037 people lived in the city, in 2000 there were already 191,615.
Culture and sights
City attractions include the National Scouting Museum, the Las Colinas Equestrian Center & Polo Club (an equestrian facility with more than 100 stables), the 1984 Mustangs of Las Colinas (the world's largest horse sculpture), and the Irving Arts Center. It houses two galleries as well as three theaters and concert halls. The center is home to the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and the New Philharmonic Orchestra of Irving, among others.
The Heritage District is home to numerous antique shops and boutiques, as well as a drugstore with a soda fountain. The Heritage House, completed in 1912, is one of the oldest buildings in the city. In Heritage Park is the Caster Cabin, a cabin built by Henry Caster in 1887. The park is also home to a historic water tower , a windmill and the library opened in 1941, the first in the city.
Gondola rides are available on the Mandalay Canal and Lake Carolyn .

Irving is the headquarters of numerous corporations: ExxonMobil , Flowserve , Fluor Corporation , Michaels Stores, Omni Hotels, Zale Corporation, Xero Hour, National Care Network and LXI Enterprise Storage.

On January 13, 1974, Dallas-Fort Worth Airport , which is partially within the urban area of Irving, began commercial operations. The airport is one of the largest in the world in terms of area. In 1999 more than 60 million passengers were handled here.
The public transport in Irving is the Dallas Area Rapid Transit performed. The Dallas light rail service provides express service to downtown Dallas.
