The starting quarterback is a common name for the regular quarterback of an American football team . In American football, starters are those players who stand on the field during the first play of their unit ( offense or defense ) and thus play from the beginning. He is often considered the most important player on a team and the figurehead of a franchise . Therefore, outstanding starting quarterbacks are also referred to as franchise quarterbacks .

With six Super Bowl victories, Tom Brady is currently the most successful starting quarterback in the NFL. The oldest starting quarterback was Steve DeBerg , who played for the Atlanta Falcons in 1998 at the age of 44 years and 279 days .
