Career

early years

Brady often attended San Francisco 49ers games with his father when he was young, so then quarterback Joe Montana became Brady's idol and role model. He attended Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, where he played baseball at the catcher 's position , as well as basketball and football. In 1995, the Montreal Expos baseball team wanted to sign him , but he decided to pursue a career in football.

college

Brady studied at the University of Michigan and played there in the first two years only as a substitute on the university football team , the Michigan Wolverines . In his third year, he competed with Drew Henson for the starting quarterback position . Brady prevailed and was able to play his last two years in Michigan as the first quarterback under head coach Lloyd Carr . In his first season as a starter, he set the records for most pass attempts (350) and most complete passes (214). He was selected to the Big Ten Conference All-Star team in both 1998 and 1999 and captained the team in his senior year. He won 20 of 25 games with the Wolverines and won the Big Ten title in 1998 by winning the Florida Citrus Bowl . In 1999 he won the Orange Bowl with the team . He is third in the University of Michigan's all-time quarterback rankings with 442 completions on 712 attempts in just two seasons.

NFL

The New England Patriots selected Brady in the sixth of seven rounds of the 2000 NFL Draft , 199th overall, on the advice of the quarterback coach. Brady was only classified as the fourth quarterback at the beginning of the season. However, as the season progressed, he was able to move up to second place behind Drew Bledsoe . In his rookie season , he was only able to throw three times, of which only one pass was successful. As a sophomore, Brady slipped into the role of first quarterback on September 23, 2001 during a game against the AFC East rivals, the New York Jets . Drew Bledsoe suffered an internal hemorrhage when he collided with linebacker Mo Lewis . Brady was then named starting quarterback later that week. In his first two games, his performance was mediocre, and he only managed a quarterback rating of 79.6 and 58.5, respectively. However, the Patriots lost just one more game with Brady that season and made the playoffs .

New England won the controversial tuck rule game of the playoffs against the Oakland Raiders in overtime. Brady injured his ankle in the AFC Championship Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was replaced by Bledsoe again for the game. At Super Bowl XXXVI their opponents were heavily favored the St. Louis Rams . Brady played again and led the game for a long time with the Patriots before the St. Louis Rams equalized to 17:17 with 1:30 of the game remaining. With 1:21 minutes remaining, the Patriots started the final drive at their own 18-yard line. Brady threw some long passes and got to the opponents' 31-yard line and threw the ball to the ground to stop the clock. With eight seconds to play, kicker Adam Vinatieri scored a field goal . Brady was voted Super Bowl MVP in his first season as a starter .

The following year, despite first place in the league with 28 touchdown passes thrown, he "only" achieved a rating of 85.7. This was due to the 14 interceptions , which for him represented the most in a season up to that point. In the second half of the season, Brady suffered a shoulder injury and according to head coach Bill Belichick , had they made the playoffs, he would not have been able to play.

The following season, the New England Patriots reached the playoffs again after a 14-2 record, where they again moved into the Super Bowl after victories over the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts , which they 32-29 against the Carolina Panthers won.

2004 followed the title defense against the Philadelphia Eagles . Brady performed well again this season, throwing for 3,692 yards and 28 touchdowns.

During the 2005 season, Brady led the league in passing yards for 4,110 (28 touchdowns). In the playoffs, the Patriots failed to the Denver Broncos - Brady's first loss in the playoffs in what was already his fourth postseason .

In 2006, Brady threw for 3,529 yards and 24 touchdowns. After beating the New York Jets and San Diego Chargers in the first two rounds of the playoffs, the Patriots lost the AFC Championship Game in Indianapolis to the Colts.

Brady led the Patriots to a 16-0 record in the regular season and into Super Bowl XLII after victories over the Jacksonville Jaguars and the San Diego Chargers . He also set a new regular-season touchdown pass record that season. Despite the "perfect season" up until then, the Patriots, as clear favorites, lost the Super Bowl 14:17 against the New York Giants .

In the first game of the 2008 season against the Kansas City Chiefs , Brady suffered a serious left knee injury and was out for the remainder of the season. He had to be operated on several times, it came to infections. Without him, the Patriots missed the playoffs, despite a good record of 11 wins and five losses.

In the 2009 season, Brady was back on the field and included another NFL record with five touchdowns in just one quarter, on October 18, 2009 against the Tennessee Titans . Brady's precise passing game, gaining 426 yards (38/45 throws) was remarkable as it snowed so heavily during the game that Titans quarterback Kerry Collins (−7 yards, 2/14) could barely handle it. He was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year for his good performance after returning from injury . In the play-offs, the Patriots lost to the Baltimore Ravens at home , with Brady performing poorly with three interceptions in the first quarter.

In the 2010 season, the team was restructured: wide receiver Randy Moss was given up, while tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez were drafted. A solid season that included Brady 36 touchdowns with just four interceptions, 358 straight throws without an interception, and leading the Patriots to 14 wins of the season earned him his second pick of the Most Valuable Player . In the play-offs, this time the Patriots lost to the New York Jets .

The following season, 2011, Brady had another good season, throwing 39 touchdowns (12 interceptions) and gaining 5,235 yards, becoming only the third quarterback after Dan Marino (1984) and Drew Brees (also in 2011). Threw passes for 5,000 yards. With Brady, New England made the playoffs again with a 13-3 win. In the 45-10 win over the Denver Broncos , Brady made six touchdown passes, equaling Steve Young 's playoff record . With the Patriots, Brady reached Super Bowl XLVI , where he again lost to the Giants, 17-21.

Brady played well again in the 2012 season (gaining 4,827 yards, 34 touchdowns, eight interceptions, Pro Bowl) and led New England to the playoffs with 12 wins. In the divisional playoffs, Brady celebrated with the Patriots in a 41-28 win over the Houston Texans , breaking Joe Montana 's record of 17 playoff wins . In the AFC Championship Game, however, he lost with the Patriots to eventual Super Bowl winners Baltimore Ravens by 13:28.

The 2013 season was associated with major changes for Brady, since his longtime wide receiver Wes Welker (moved to the Denver Broncos ), the two tight ends Rob Gronkowski (broken arm, then cruciate ligament rupture) and Aaron Hernandez (murder charge) and right tackle Sebastian Vollmer ( broken leg) early for the entire season. Brady was just short of the NFL record for consecutive games with at least one touchdown (54) when he went empty -handed in the game against the Cincinnati Bengals after 52 straight games. Despite this, Brady rushed for 4,343 yards on 25 touchdowns (11 interceptions) and was re-elected to the Pro Bowl . With 12:4 wins, the Patriots came back into the playoffs, where Brady came after the 43:22 win against the Indianapolis Colts on a total of 6,147 yards thrown in the playoffs and thus the first quarterback in NFL history gained more than 6,000 yards in the postseason.

After a slow start to the following season with two wins and two losses in their first four games, the Patriots began to play better under Brady. In Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals , Brady became the sixth NFL player to surpass 50,000 yards. He led the Patriots to the No. 1 seed in the AFC with 12-4 wins and played well in both the 35-31 win over the Baltimore Ravens and the 45-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts . At the end of the season, the Patriots won Super Bowl XLIX with a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks . In this Super Bowl he was voted Super Bowl MVP for the third time and broke several records. Including the record for most touchdowns in Super Bowls with 13 in six games - Joe Montana scored 11 in four Super Bowls. His fourth Super Bowl win as a starting quarterback drew him level with Montana and Terry Bradshaw and shared Montana's record for most Super Bowl MVP awards.

In May 2015, the NFL released the Wells Report , which found that 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Patriots against the Colts in the AFC Championship Game were under -inflated (at least 12.5 psi ). In this as " Deflategate " (English: "deflate" = let air escape) Brady was assumed to be an accomplice. Brady was banned from the NFL for four games, the Patriots lost a total of two draft picks. On September 3, that ban was overturned in court.

In the third game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars , Brady threw his 400th touchdown pass, becoming only the fourth quarterback after Brett Favre , Peyton Manning and Dan Marino to cross that mark. Against the New York Jets , he played his 213th game for New England and became the longest-serving player in Patriots history. In the 30-23 win, he achieved the remarkable feat of gaining 370 of his team's 371 yards (355 yards from passing, 15 from running). In the playoffs, Brady first led the Patriots to a 27-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs and reached New England in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos . This was his 31st play-off game, breaking Adam Vinatieri 's record, but the 18-20 defeat ended his season.

On April 25, 2016, Brady's four-game ban for involvement in the so-called "deflategate" was upheld by an appeals court. Brady had a very good regular season, winning 11 of his 12 games as a starting quarterback, notching 28 touchdowns with only 2 interceptions, and being selected to the Pro Bowl for the 12th time. On February 5, 2017, Brady won his fifth Super Bowl with a 34-28 overtime win over the Atlanta Falcons and was named Super Bowl LI 's Super Bowl MVP . It was the Super Bowl with the biggest comeback in NFL history (from a 28-3 deficit) and the first to be decided in overtime.

Tom Brady (2017)

On October 15, 2017, Brady scored his 187th win in a regular season game in a 24-17 win over the New York Jets . He broke the shared record of Peyton Manning and Brett Favre (186 each). With the 20:24 win in the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 21, 2018, he moved into Super Bowl LII with the Patriots . In the Super Bowl, his team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles 41-33.

In the 2018 season, after a mixed start for the New England Patriots , critics again accused Tom Brady of being too old. With a 37:31 success after overtime in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs on January 20, 2019 at their home ground Arrowhead Stadium , Tom Brady was able to reach Super Bowl LIII with his New England Patriots . On February 3, 2019, at the age of 41, he won Super Bowl LIII 13-3 , his sixth Super Bowl. He is the first player to do this.

After his contract expired, Brady announced on March 17, 2020 that he would no longer play for the Patriots next season. On March 20, Brady reportedly agreed to a two-year, $25 million per year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , according to media reports . He advanced to Super Bowl LV with the Buccaneers and led them to a 31-9 win. Brady was voted Super Bowl MVP for the fifth time and won his seventh Super Bowl. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers became the first team to win the Super Bowl at home. After the season, Brady extended his contract at Tampa through 2022.

On December 19, 2021, in a 9-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints , he suffered a clean sheet defeat for the first time in about 15 years. Following the conclusion of the 2021 season, Brady announced his retirement on February 1, 2022 after previously losing 27-30 with the Bucs in the divisional round to the Los Angeles Rams .

Victories, awards and records

Brady is considered by far the best quarterback of all time in the NFL due to numerous wins, awards and records in the regular season and the playoffs . After winning Super Bowl LI , he had won 208 NFL games, surpassing Peyton Manning 's previous record (200) and had a 77% win rate (208 of 269). He is the first starting quarterback to win seven Super Bowls . In the regular season, Brady made 38 turns from behind in the fourth quarter (“Fourth Quarter Comeback”) and 10 times in the playoffs to win with the last attacking streak (“ Game-Winning Drive”), which is a league record. This includes his victories in Super Bowl XXXVI , Super Bowl XXXVIII , Super Bowl XLIX , Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LIII .

Brady was selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times and an All-Pro four times . He was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year once , Associated Press Sportsman of the Year once, and Sporting News Sportsman of the Year twice . He was also voted MVP in the league in 2007, 2010 and 2017 . Brady held the record from Peyton Manning with 50 touchdown passes made in the 2007 season until Manning reclaimed that pass in 2013 with 55 touchdowns. Brady is by far both the winningest and longest-serving quarterback of the NFL postseason with 25 playoff wins and 34 playoff games (the respective runners-up are Joe Montana with 14 wins and Peyton Manning with 27 games) and the first quarterback to threw for more than 6,000 yards in playoff games.

With just 1.8% interceptions, he is one of the least interception -prone quarterbacks in NFL history. He presented this i.a. in the 2016 regular season when he set a new record for touchdowns to interceptions ratio of 28:2 (28 touchdowns with 2 interceptions in at least 300 shots). Previously, Nick Foles had set that record 27-2 in the 2013 season. In addition to his throwing qualities, Brady is known for his effective quarterback sneak , which was successful in 91.3% of all attempts (as of January 2015).

In the 33:27 against the Buffalo Bills on December 12, 2021, he surpassed the record of 7142 completed passes in the NFL that Drew Brees had held to date and was 7156 so-called completions at the end of the game. He also managed the 700th touchdown pass in the NFL.
