Early years

Childhood and high school

Lynch grew up in Oakland, California in a difficult social environment as one of four children. His mother, Delisa Lynch, who came from an athletic family, raised the children on her own and encouraged them to play sports and attend the siblings' games while she had to work so that they would not get into trouble on the streets of Oakland. Even as a child, Lynch was fast and tall and was called "Man Child" by his coach at the time.

Lynch attended Oakland Technical High School , where he practiced basketball , wrestling and athletics in addition to football . In the football team he was not only used as a running back, but also as a quarterback , linebacker and defensive back . However, he had the most success in the running back position, where he was elected to the All League team for three years in a row. In 2004, his senior year of high school, he ran more than 2,000 yards and 33 touchdowns in ten games and intercepted 20 passes as a defender. At that time, Rivals.com rated him as a 4-star talent and second best running back of his year, behind Adrian Peterson .

Lynch at the Las Vegas Bowl 2005

college

Lynch attended the University of California at Berkeley , where he played college football for the Golden Bears . As a freshman and substitute for starter JJ Arrington , he ran 71 times with the ball and scored a total of 628 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 19 passes for two touchdowns and 147 yards.

In 2005 Arrington retired from college and Lynch started running back for the Golden Bears. Despite having to sit out two games due to injury, he reached 1,246 yards from 196 runs and ten touchdowns, as well as 15 trapped passes for 125 yards. In the 2005 Las Vegas Bowl , Lynch reached 194 yards and three touchdowns and was named the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP) for this performance .

In 2006 Lynch was named to the All- Pac-10 selection and the AFCA-All-America-Team , and was named All-Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year . His last game for the California Golden Bears made Lynch on December 28, 2006. In the Holiday Bowl he scored two touchdowns against Texas A&M and shared the award of Co-Offensive Player of the Game with his teammate Nate Longshore .

On January 2, 2007, Lynch announced that he would end his college career and participate in the NFL Draft . He holds the school record for most games with more than 100 run yards (17) and ran the second most yards in school history (3,230) in the three seasons.

NFL

Buffalo Bills

Marshawn Lynch was selected in the 2007 NFL Draft as the twelfth player in the first round of the Buffalo Bills and shared the operating times with Fred Jackson from the start . In his first season in the NFL , he became the top performer at the Bills, running 1,115 yards and seven touchdowns in 13 missions. He also caught 18 passes for 184 yards. His best game was on November 4, 2007 against the Cincinnati Bengals , when he ran 29 times with the ball for 153 yards and a touchdown.

The 2008 season ended Lynch with 1,036 yards (eight touchdowns) from runs and 300 yards from 47 passes (one touchdown). For this performance he was nominated as a replacement for the injured Chris Johnson for the Pro Bowl . After the end of the season, after a search of his car, Lynch was charged with gun possession and sentenced to three years probation and 80 hours of community service. The NFL then suspended him for the first three games of the 2009 season.

During Lynch's suspension, Fred Jackson took the chance and convinced with strong performances, so Lynch only had a few hours of play and gained a total of 450 yards of space after his return. In the preseason of 2010, Lynch injured and launched as standard in the new season. After four mixed appearances, the Bills finally let him move to the Seattle Seahawks on October 6, 2010 for two draft picks (a four-round pick in 2011 and a conditional pick in 2012) .

Seattle Seahawks

At the Seahawks, he met fellow running back from college, Justin Forsett . In his first assignment for the new employer, he managed a touchdown against the Chicago Bears . His best game was against the Carolina Panthers when he ran for 83 yards and three touchdowns on the thirteenth game day. Despite a record of 7-9, he reached the play-offs for the first time with his team. On January 8, 2011, the Seahawks played in the wildcard round against the reigning Super Bowl champion , the New Orleans Saints . Lynch managed a touchdown run over 67 yards in this game, in which he broke nine tackles and threw Saints cornerback Tracy Porter to the ground with a stiff arm. This run became known as " Beast Quake ", a suitcase word consisting of Lynch's nickname "Beastmode" and "Earthquake", because the partying and jumping fans generated vibrations during the move that were registered by a seismograph near the stadium . In that game, Lynch posted 131 yards on 19 runs, and Seattle won 41:36. A week later, the team lost 24:35 at the Chicago Bears. Lynch finished the season with 737 yards run and 6 touchdowns.

Lynch 2014

In 2011 , Lynch set new career highs when he ran 15 games for 1,204 yards and twelve touchdowns. During the game against the Philadelphia Eagles it was filmed how he received Skittles as a reward after a touchdown from a coach . From that point on, Seahawks fans would rain skittles onto the field on each of his touchdowns. December 18, 2011 Lynch broke the franchise record of Shaun Alexander by erlief in the tenth game in a row a touchdown. Lynch made his second Pro Bowl appearance after the season when he replaced San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore . On March 4, 2012, he signed a new four-year contract for 31 million dollars .

From the 2012 season onwards, the Seahawks' offensive game was completely tailored to Lynch. The dominant running game relieved rookie quarterback Russell Wilson , and Lynch ran for 1,590 yards (eleven touchdowns), his career best. The team moved back into the play-offs after a year off with eleven wins and six defeats, and Lynch was voted All-Pro . In the wildcard round, Lynch ran for 124 yards and a touchdown in the 24:14 success at the Washington Redskins . A week later, however, they lost at the Atlanta Falcons after 7:27 deficit, which could meanwhile be turned into a 28:27 lead, by a field goal by Matt Bryant in the final seconds.

In the 2013 season he played a major role in the Seattle Seahawks' entry into Super Bowl XLVIII , because the running game continued to be the heart of the offensive. Lynch scored 1,257 yards and 12 touchdowns and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the third straight year. By a 13-3 record, the Seahawks secured the home advantage for the play-offs and Lynch helped his team with games over 140 and 109 yards and a total of three touchdowns to success against the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers. In the surprisingly clear 43: 8 victory in the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos , Lynch scored 39 yards of space and a touchdown and thus brought the first title to Seattle.

In 2014 , Lynch scored 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns in the Seahawks' continuing offensive. On matchday 16, he managed the longest touchdown run of his career against the Arizona Cardinals . Similar to the beastquake, he broke through several tackles over 79 yards and ran the ball inexorably into the opponent's end zone . In the NFC Championship Game against the Green Bay Packers , Lynch contributed 157 yards and a touchdown to the fact that his team was able to make up a 7:19 deficit within four minutes and turn into a 28:22 success in overtime and thus turn qualified again for the Super Bowl. Before Super Bowl XLIX , Lynch again showed his shyness towards the media when at a compulsory event he answered all questions for five minutes with “I'm just here so I won't get fined” (I'm just here so I don't have to pay a fine ) answered. He has previously been fined several times by the NFL for his unwillingness to give interviews. In the game against the New England Patriots he achieved 102 yards of space in 24 attempts. Shortly before the end, the Seahawks were one yard from the opposing end zone, instead of giving the ball to Lynch, they decided to pass the ball and Malcolm Butler intercepted the ball. Thus, the defense of the title failed and the Seahawks lost 24:28. The decision not to give Lynch the ball in this situation caused astonishment among fans and the media and was even described as the worst move in NFL history.

On March 6, 2015, Lynch signed a new two-year contract for $ 24 million. After a moderate first half of the season, in which he played again and again, he missed the last seven regular season games because he had to undergo an operation. His best performance of the season came on the seventh game day against the San Francisco 49ers when he scored 122 yards and a touchdown. In his absence, rookie Thomas Rawls was initially used, but he was also injured, so the focus was increasingly placed on the passing game. The Seahawks moved through a 10: 9 win at the Minnesota Vikings in the divisional round of the play-offs, in which Lynch was ready to go again. In the 24:31 defeat at the Carolina Panthers , however, he was not a big factor with six runs for 20 yards.

After rumors about a possible end of his career before the start of the season, Marshawn Lynch announced the end of his career at the age of 29 on February 7, 2016 during Super Bowl 50 via Twitter. On May 5, 2016, Lynch was placed on the Reserve / Retired List , but had not yet submitted his resignation papers by the end of May. The General Manager of the Seahawks, John Schneider , announced in early May 2016 that the Seahawks would no longer be awarded Lynch's shirt number 24 in the 2016 season .

Oakland Raiders

Before the 2017 NFL season , Lynch was toying with a return to the NFL after his temporary retirement. After good discussions with the Oakland Raiders , based in his hometown of Oakland , he finally came to an agreement with them and was willing to play in the NFL again. At that time, his contract with the Seahawks ran for a year, which is why he could not go to the Raiders as a free agent . However, the Raiders wanted a decision before the 2017 NFL Draft .

They finally agreed on an exchange. The Seahawks gave Lynch their 6th round draft pick and received the Raiders' 5th round pick. Both draft picks concern the NFL Draft 2018 Marshawn Lynch signed on 26 April 2017 the Raiders a two-year contract in which he is a base salary of 3 million in the first year US dollar gets. The second year is recorded as an option for the Raiders. If this option is exercised, a contractual clause applies that doubles Lynch's salary from the first year. In the second game of the 2017 regular season against the New York Jets , Lynch scored his first touchdown for the Raiders, which was followed by another touchdown in the next two games. Overall, Lynch only played six games in the season before a protracted groin injury stopped him. In the 21 games in the two seasons in which he was active for the Oakland Raiders, he ran for 1,267 yards of space and scored 10 touchdowns. In April 2019, according to ESPN , he stated that he had no plans to play football again.

Return to Seattle

On December 23, 2019, he was re-signed by the Seahawks after they suffered massive injury problems from their running backs. At 21:26 the Seahawks against the San Francisco 49ers on the 17th and final game day of the season, he contributed 34 yards and a touchdown in 12 ball actions. Despite this defeat, the Seahawks moved into the play-offs thanks to their record of 11: 5 as second of the NFC West and entered the wildcard round of the winners of the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles, on January 5, 2020. In the 17: 9 triumph, Lynch received the ball only six times and only gained 7 yards of space, but was able to contribute a touchdown. The following week, on January 12, 2020, the Seahawks competed with the second-placed Green Bay Packers, who pulled away by 21: 3 by halftime. Lynch received the ball 12 times in this game and scored 26 yards and two touchdowns, but could not prevent the Seahawks from being beaten by the Packers at 23:28 despite an intense catch-up in the second half.

Personal

Lynch is considered very media-shy. In November 2014, the NFL fined him $ 100,000 for failing to perform his interview duties. After he was threatened with a fine of US $ 500,000 in the run-up to the Super Bowl XLIX , he repeated the sentence "I'm only here so I don't have to pay a fine" 29 times in an interview. In another interview, he repeated the sentence “You know why I am here” for about five minutes, which means “You know why I am here” in order to avoid punishment again.

Lynch has several relatives who also play or have played American football professionally. Among them are his cousins JaMarcus Russell (former quarterback for the Oakland Raiders ), Josh Johnson (current backup quarterback for the Buffallo Bills), Robert Jordan (former wide receiver in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League ) and his uncle Lorenzo Lynch , who is from From 1987 to 1997 he was cornerback in the NFL.
