Under the brand name Skittles are marketed by Wrigley sugar coated chewable coated tablets in various flavors, mainly fruit flavor, sold. The Skittles sold in Europe are made in Poland .

history

Skittles were produced in England from 1974. After the introduction in North America in 1979, three years later the production was mainly carried out in the USA. The product quickly gained popularity there and was subsequently increasingly distributed internationally.
Today, Skittles, like other Wrigley products, are available in nearly 180 countries.
In Germany, Skittles were initially mostly only available from confectionery vending machines, but the product is also increasingly found in the assortments of various retail chains.

In 2009, Wrigley started a comprehensive web-based advertising campaign in the US for the Skittles product using a variety of media including Facebook , YouTube , Flickr and Twitter . This has been controversially discussed by many users of this media.

Others

  • Original Skittles can be recognized by the white "S" printed on them.
  • In collaboration with Haribo, Nestlé offered a competing product called Fruity Smarties that was very similar in structure . This was mainly distributed in German-speaking countries and Canada . However, so far there is no sales in the USA; this can presumably be traced back to the dominance of the skittles widespread there.
  • In the BBC3 show "Mischief - Britain's Really Disgusting Foods", Skittles were described as the most nutritionally poor food in Great Britain, which is also not approved in the United States of America due to the ingredient E124 .
