Career highlights and awards

Darrelle Revis Shavar (* 14. July 1985 in Aliquippa , Pennsylvania ) is a former American American football poker players on the position of the cornerbacks . He played for the New York Jets , the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , the New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs in the National Football League (NFL) for a total of eleven years - eight of them for the Jets. With the Patriots he won the Super Bowl XLIX .

Revis was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, as his greatest strength is the man marking, which he often took the assigned wide receiver out of the game. His nickname "Revis Island" (Revis Island) is an allusion to the fact that good wide receivers are taken out of the game by Revis so well that they are "stranded on Revis Island".

college

Revis attended the University of Pittsburgh in the city of the same name after graduating from the local Aliquippa Senior High School . There he played college football for the Pittsburgh Panthers in his freshman year . For the team, he played all twelve games in his first season and started in eleven of them. The Panthers won eight of twelve games and later took part in the Fiesta Bowl . This was played on January 1, 2005 in the Sun Devil Stadium against the Utah Utes and the Panthers lost 7:35. After the postseason , Revis was voted into the All-American Freshman First Team by sports magazine The Sporting News .

For the new season, coach Walt Harris was surprisingly replaced by Dave Wannstedt . Under the new coach, things didn't go so well for the Panthers, who then only won five of eleven games. Revis still showed good performance and was one of the best defenders in the Big East Conference , which is why he was elected to the All-Big East First Team , for example .

The Panthers' record did not improve significantly in the next season either and so the postseason was again not reached. Revis showed again good performances and received several honors after the end of the season. In addition, he decided at the end of the season to leave the university early and to register for the NFL Draft a year earlier .

NFL

Draft

To get a better position in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft , the New York Jets exchanged their voting rights in the first , second and fifth rounds with the Carolina Panthers on April 28, 2007 for higher voting rights in the first round and a sixth - Round pick . The Jets chose Darrelle Revis with the swapped fourteenth pick. After he was drafted, Revis only signed his contract with the Jets in August, which was valid for six years.

New York Jets

The rookie season

In his first season, coach Eric Mangini appointed him directly to the cornerback position , making him the first Jets rookie since Ray Mickens to do so. As a left cornerback, he played a solid season, starting in 16 games. He got three interceptions , forced a fumble and recorded 87 tackles . But after 16 match days, the Jets were only third in the AFC East and missed the play-offs .

2008 season: First Pro Bowl

For the 2008 season , the Jets signed the almost 40-year-old Brett Favre as quarterback . With Favre as starting quarterback , the Jets scored significantly more points on offense than in the previous year and Revis also managed his first touchdown in the NFL in the fourth week of the current season against the Arizona Cardinals after an interception . But in defense , despite Revi's good performance, things continued to go bad and so the Jets missed the play-offs as third behind the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins this season .

Revi's achievements were nevertheless recognized by his appointment to the Pro Bowl . At the Pro Bowl he was next to Nnamdi Asomugha and Cortland Finnegan one of three cornerbacks on the American Football Conference (AFC) team. During the game he was temporarily on the bench and was only substituted on later. But he managed an interception on the field, catching the football with just one hand.

2009 season: first play-offs

After three disappointing seasons under Eric Mangini, he was fired and the Jets signed Rex Ryan as their new head coach . Under his leadership, both the overall performance of the jets and that of Revis increased. In the first games of the season he managed to keep the two Pro Bowl wide receivers Andre Johnson and Randy Moss under a space gain of 35 yards . In the fifth week of the season he then made a big mistake against the Miami Dolphins , so that the opposing wide receiver Ted Ginn was able to cover 53 yards after catching the football and scored a touchdown. Aside from this mistake, Revis played an outstanding season and was re-elected to the Pro Bowl. Revis also came in second in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year election . The Jets had to defeat the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of the season to move into the play-offs. This was achieved by the Jets, who ultimately won 37-0, with Chad Ochocinco , who was covered by Revis, not catching a pass.

Six days later, the Jets met the Bengals again in the play-offs. This time Ochocinco managed to catch the football twice against Revis and gained 28 yards. Revis, on the other hand, managed an interception and so in the end the Jets won 24:14 against the Bengals. The next opponent, in the second week of the play-offs, were the San Diego Chargers . In the game against them, Revis prevented two passes and he succeeded again with an interception, which this time turned the game around, so that the Jets could just win with 17:14. Thus, for the first time since the 1998 season , the Jets successfully participated in the AFC Championship Game , where they met the Indianapolis Colts . Against the Colts, Revis defended well and only allowed two pass catches. Nevertheless, the Jets allowed too many opposing points with 30 and only scored 17 themselves, although they did not score a point in the second half.

Season 2010: Another failure in the AFC Championship Game

As in his rookie season, Revis missed the jets' preparation for the season again, as he negotiated new contractual terms with the jets. On September 5, he signed a new four-year contract a week before the start of the season.

After a loss in the first game of the season against the Baltimore Ravens , Revis injured himself in the second game of the season against the New England Patriots , which was won. Therefore, he had to sit out for three game days before he could play against the Denver Broncos again over the full distance. After that, the Jets had a week without play, so Revis could continue to recover from his injury. The rest of the season he played on the starting line-up of the Jets and finished second with them in the AFC East and reached the AFC Wildcard Game. There the Jets met the Colts and managed to retaliate for the defeat the year before and just won 17:16. The Colts' Revis covered wide receiver, Reggie Wayne , caught only one pass. The Jets also won the following game against division rivals New England Patriots. Then they failed again in the AFC Championship Game, as they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers .

2011 season: missed play-offs

After the Jets got off to a good start in the 2011 season and were on the play-off course with 8 wins and 5 losses, they lost the last three games and just missed the play-offs for the third time in a row with an 8: 8 balance to reach. Revis personally still had another good season and was elected to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time and to the First-Team All-Pro for the third time . He cemented his position as one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

2012 season: ruptured cruciate ligament

In the first game of the 2012 season against the Buffalo Bills Revis had five tackles and one interception, but had to leave the game early due to a slight concussion and had to pause in the second game. In the third game of the season against the Miami Dolphins Revis captured a fumble , before he had to end the game early again due to an injury, this time in his knee. This injury turned out to be a cruciate ligament rupture the next day , making Revis miss the rest of the season and being put on the Injured Reserve List by the Jets .

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

2013 season: Comeback Player of the Year

In April 2013 it was announced that Revis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be transferred, he received 96 million for the six-year contract estimated US dollar . In return for Revis, the Jets got the 2013 first-round draft pick (# 13) and a fourth-round draft pick from the Buccaneers. Revis had a strong season, was re-elected to the Pro Bowl , and was also named NFL Comeback Player of the Year after his cruciate ligament tear . The Buccaneers, however, had big problems and could only win 8 out of 16 games. Since the Buccaneers defense relied primarily on zone coverage, Revis, as a specialist in man marking, did not fit perfectly into the scheme. In addition, his high salary weighed heavily on the salary cap . For these reasons, the contract was terminated after just one season and Revis became a free agent for the first time in his career .

New England Patriots

2014 season: Super Bowl victory

In March 2014, just hours after his release from the Buccaneers, it was revealed that he had been awarded a one-year contract with the New England Patriots for an estimated $ 12 million. Revis played a strong season with the Patriots and was selected as a starter in the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro. The Patriots moved into the play-offs after a regular season with 12: 4 wins. In the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts , which the Patriots won 45: 7, Revis managed an interception against quarterback Andrew Luck . As a result, Revis reached the Super Bowl for the first time in his career . In Super Bowl XLIX , he recorded a tackle, and he sank quarterback Russell Wilson once. The Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks and Revis won his first Super Bowl. In the last two play-off games of the season (AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl) Revis allowed a total of only one captured pass of the opponents covered by him.

After his first season in New England, the Patriots turned down the option to renew Revis' contract for another year for $ 20 million, making Revis a free agent again.

Reunion with the New York Jets

On March 10, 2015, the New York Jets signed Darrelle Revis with a five-year contract totaling $ 70 million, of which 39 million were guaranteed. He returned to the team that drafted him in 2007. However, at the start of the Free Agency on March 9, 2017, he was dismissed for salary cap reasons.

Kansas City Chiefs

On November 22, 2017, Revis signed a two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs . Before the start of the 2018 season, Revis retired from the NFL.

Personal

Revis' parents are Diana Gilbert and Darryl Revis. He has two siblings, DéAudra and Terry. His mother was a high school athlete and his uncle Sean Gilbert played as a defensive lineman in the NFL from 1992 to 2003 . Revis has a daughter, Deyani, and a son, Jayden. In December 2012, Nike released a shoe designed by Revis called the Nike Zoom Revis.
