Slater was dragged 153rd by the Patriots in the 2008 NFL Draft and established himself as a reliable special teamer on Head Coach Bill Belichick's team . He regularly scores a double-digit number of tackles against opposing kick returner or punt returner and is consistently at the top of the statistics for special teams tackles. In addition, Slater was sporadically used as a kick returner himself. For his achievements, he has been voted into the Pro Bowl game of the best NFL professionals five times since 2011 . With New England, Slater won the Super Bowl XLIX in the 2014 season and the Super Bowl LI two years later . In Super Bowl LI, the first Super Bowl match with overtime , Slater played an important supporting role because he was right when tossing the coin , so the Patriots could decide to drive the first series of attacks and use them to make the game-winning touchdown.

In January 2017, Slater received the Bart Starr Award , which is presented annually to an NFL American football player who stood out in the previous game year for his exceptional character, turned out to be a leading player and was particularly active in his social environment.
