Career highlights and awards

Sebastian Georg Vollmer (born July 10, 1984 in Kaarst ) is a former German American football player and current TV expert and commentator in this sport.

As an active athlete, he played from 2009 to 2016 in the National Football League (NFL) for the New England Patriots on the position of offensive tackles . The Patriots previously selected Vollmer in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft . With the Patriots he won the Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks and the Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons . With the Düsseldorf Panthers Vollmer played in all positions on the offensive line , in college and with the Patriots as left and right tackle.

His nickname is Sea Bass ( English for sea bass ).

Career

youth

Vollmer attended the Quirinus-Gymnasium Neuss and graduated from high school there in 2003. As a teenager, Sebastian Vollmer was also a good swimmer and at the Neuss swimming club in a training group with Thomas Rupprath . He started playing American football at the age of 14. From 1998 to 2003 Vollmer played as left tackle with the Düsseldorf Panther and recommended himself there for his later college career.

college

In 2003 he traveled with the German national youth team to the United States, where he was discovered by the coaches at the University of Houston and offered a football scholarship. In 2004, in his first year in the USA, he could hardly speak English and therefore took a break as a red shirt , which allowed him to study and participate in training, but not have to play, which meant that none of the four years of playing eligibility was lost. He initially held the tight end position but was transferred to the left tackle position in his sophomore year 2005. In 2006 he was suspended due to a back injury.

From 2007 to 2008 he was in Houston 25 games in a row regular player for the Cougars, each of which reached an 8: 5 balance and a bowl participation. The coach of the offensive line was Joe Gilbert, who had previously coached the later patriot Nick Kaczur at the University of Toledo . In its final season in 2008, the Cougars won the 2008 Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl against the Air Force Falcons after a long string of defeats in bowl games .

As a “senior in the fifth year”, Vollmer was appointed left tackle in the “First Team All- Conference USA ”. Although he was not invited to the NFL Combine , especially since he was two to three years older than other NFL candidates at just under 25, he was under observation by the coach of the Patriots' offensive line, Dante Scarnecchia.

NFL

In spring 2009 he was selected as the seventh offensive tackle in the NFL Draft as a total of 58th player in the second round. This was the first selection of a player who had learned to play football in Germany ( Markus Koch played in Canada as a teenager).

2009 season

With the New England Patriots Vollmer was initially intended as a reserve right tackle, as he lacks penetration for the left side, which is the "blind side" of a right-handed quarterback.

After a knee injury to Matt Light , who had been in the left tackle position for years, Vollmer moved up to the starting line-up. The sixth game of his team, which until then had a record of 3-2, took place against the winless Tennessee Titans on a snow-covered field, with both teams wearing the throwback uniforms in the style of the founding times to celebrate the AFL's 50th anniversary. In this home game Vollmer made several important blocks, including a 45- yard - touchdown -Lauf of Laurence Maroney to lead in the first quarter. He also effectively protected his quarterback, Tom Brady , from two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch , while Brady set a record with five touchdown passes in the second quarter. In addition, the final score of 59-0 was the highest to-zero victory since the NFL merged with the AFL in 1970. Vollmer's performance was rated as good. In the seventh game, a win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at London's Wembley Stadium , Vollmer was involved from the start. In the following three games, Vollmer contributed as the starting left tackle to Brady gaining at least 300 yards of space through passes. In the narrow defeat against the unbeaten Colts, All-Pro Defensive End Dwight Freeney could not score a sack against Vollmer for the first time this season. In the game against the Jets, Vollmer had to leave the field temporarily due to a head injury. Not least because concussions have recently become controversial in the NFL, Vollmer had to take a two-week break from coach Belichick , who was silent in this regard, due to the injury, especially since Matt Light was able to fill his old place again. Towards the end of the season, Vollmer started as the right tackle , now in place of Nick Kaczur . Vollmer has now been ranked as the Patriots' best rookie, especially since he didn't allow the Dolphins player, Joey Porter , to score the most sacks in the AFC in 2008 . Since the Patriots won the AFC East , they received the Baltimore Ravens in the first play-off round , who went into the play-offs with a wildcard . Vollmer was the starter - as a right tackle - in his first play-off game. The Patriots lost the game on January 10, 2010 at 2:33 pm.

2010 season

Vollmer was a regular player in all 17 games of the 2010 season and was voted into the 2010 Associated Press All-Pro Team (second team) by journalists . He was not taken into account for the Pro Bowl , as fans there are also entitled to vote, and Vollmer was still relatively unknown.

2011 season

Before the first game of the 2011 season , against the Miami Dolphins , Vollmer was reported injured with back problems. Newcomer Nate Solder replaced him in the position of the right tackle and had to allow a sack . Although center Dan Koppen was also eliminated with a broken ankle, the weakened offensive line worked so well that Tom Brady was able to gain 517 yards of space in the passing game , the fifth best performance of all time in the NFL at the time. In the home win against the San Diego Chargers , Vollmer played again, with the formation of the offensive line constantly changing and Vollmer's back problems were not yet cured, which is why he was reported as injured again. After the weekend without play, Vollmer was able to train again. On the eighth day of the match at the end of October at the Pittsburgh Steelers , Solder started as a right tackle, but took turns with Vollmer. Neither of them could prevent Sacks through LaMarr Woodley . On February 5, 2012, he lost to the New York Giants with the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI .

2012 season

In the 2012 season Vollmer was not in the starting lineup in only one game. In the playoffs, the Patriots lost again at home to the Ravens, who won the Superbowl. At the end of the season, his contract expired and other teams were reluctant because of his injuries. In March 2013, Vollmer signed a new four-year contract with the Patriots in which he is guaranteed around US $ 2 million a year, with bonuses for participation in 80% or 90% of all offensive moves up to 27 million . US $ total. A Pro Bowl nomination brings in around US $ 250,000.

2013 season

The 2013 season ended for Vollmer in the middle of the season, as he broke his right leg in the match against the Miami Dolphins and was out the rest of the season.

2014 season

The healing process was complete by the start of the 2014 season, but the Patriots surprisingly gave up top achiever Logan Mankins . Two of the first four games were partly clearly lost until the new O-Line coach Dave DeGuglielmo found a lineup between the two regular tackles Solder and Vollmer that gave Brady the relatively short time he needed to throw the pass. At the end of the season, Sebastian Vollmer moved into the Super Bowl ( Super Bowl XLIX ) for the second time after a clear victory over the Colts with the New England Patriots and won it on February 1, 2015 with 28:24 against the Seattle Seahawks . At the time, Vollmer was celebrated in the media as the first German player to win the Super Bowl, although Markus Koch from Niedermarsberg was already successful with the Washington Redskins in January 1988 .

2015 season

In the 2015 season , Brady should be suspended for the first four games as a result of the Deflategate affair, but was then allowed to compete. In addition, the Patriots initially surprised the professional world with an unusual but successful frequent change of staff in the offensive line. However, many O-Line players were injured, so that at times no substitute was available, except for tight end Michael Williams, who is not allowed to catch a pass in an O-Line position. After the season ended prematurely for left tackle Nate Solder due to a bicep injury, Vollmer switched to the important left, blind side for right-hander Tom Brady . In the game against the Redskins in early November, Vollmer suffered a second concussion and had to pause a game. Despite bad luck with injuries in other parts of the team, the Patriots won the first ten games, but then lost four of the remaining six. New England was able to pause in the first round of the playoffs and then defeated the Chiefs with the help of a good performance from the offensive line. In the AFC Championship Game, the attack formation was put under strong pressure by the defense of the Broncos with the later Super Bowl MVP Von Miller , so that New England could not equalize shortly before the end.

2016 season

In the 2016 season Vollmer could not play a game for the New England Patriots due to an injury. After shoulder surgery and persistent hip problems, the Patriots put him on the Injured Reserve List .

Following the season, he was fired by the Patriots and became a free agent . In May 2017, he announced that he would be retiring from the NFL.

Life after career as an active person

From September 2017 Sebastian Vollmer worked at ran Football as an NFL expert and co-commentator. On September 8, 2018, his autobiography German Champion: The Story of My NFL Career , which he wrote together with Dominik Hechler from the Munich publishing group , was published by riva Verlag . In September 2019, he switched to the DAZN streaming service as a commentator, where he and Markus Kuhn commented on the NFL's Monday evening games.
