The NFL is the highest American professional league in American football and the Super Bowl is the final of the NFL.

The media company ProSiebenSat.1 Media extended the NFL broadcasting rights for at least two more years in summer 2019.

history

prehistory

From 1998 to 2003, Sat.1 showed highlights of the games from the NFL and NFL Europe under the title ran - Sat.1-Football, as well as the live broadcasts of the two finals, the Super Bowl and World Bowl . From 2006 the Super Bowl was always in the first . It was broadcast on site with our own cameras and with German commentators.

2012 to 2015: Start with the Super Bowl on Sat.1

At the beginning of December 2011 it was announced that ProSiebenSat.1 Media had secured the broadcasting rights for the 2012 Super Bowl from the marketer IMG . It includes the rights for live broadcasts on the Sat.1 television program and on the ran.de website on the Internet . ran Football: Super Bowl XLVI was hosted on the night of February 5th to 6th, 2012 from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis by ran presenter Matthias Killing . Frank Buschmann and Jan Stecker also commented on the game . Andrea Kaiser reported as a reporter from a football party in Düsseldorf .

In addition to the Super Bowl , Sat.1 also broadcast the AFC Championship Game in 2013, one of the NFL's two semi-finals. Only highlights from the NFC Championship Game were shown on Sat.1. Both games were broadcast live on the ran.de website . The website took over the signal from Puls 4 for the transmission of the NFC game . The Super Bowl 2013 was again moderated and commented on site by Frank Buschmann and Jan Stecker . Due to a 36-minute power failure during the Super Bowl, sports commentator Jörg Opuchlik in Munich and field reporter Florian Bauer commented on the game at short notice in New Orleans .

For 2014 and 2015, ProSiebenSat.1 Media again secured the transmission rights from the NFL rights marketer IMG. In addition to the Super Bowl 2014, they included three of four Divisional Playoff games , with only two games being broadcast live on Sat.1. Only highlights were shown from the third game. Instead, all three games were broadcast live on the ran.de website . In addition, the NFC Championship Game was broadcast live on Sat.1 and ran.de; from the AFC Championship Game only highlights were shown. 2015 was handled as in the previous year, this time the AFC Championship Game was broadcast live on Sat.1.

2015 to 2017: Expansion with the NFL Regular Season to ProSieben Maxx

In July 2015, it became known that ProSiebenSat.1 Media had secured the broadcast rights to the regular NFL season and the play-offs for three years. As a rule, two games per game day are broadcast live on ProSieben Maxx on Sunday . In addition to the Conference Championships (3rd round of play-offs) and Divisional Playoffs (2nd round of play-offs), which were broadcast in previous years, the Wild Card Playoffs (1st round of play-offs), Pro Bowl (All-Star Game), Kickoff Game (1st game of the season) and the NFL Draft shown. Preseason games will also be broadcast on ProSiebenMaxx for the first time.

To relieve the ran Football team, consisting of Frank Buschmann and Jan Stecker , a commentator casting was held in August and September 2015 under the hashtag #lasstmichran . Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld emerged as the winner and was allowed to comment on a live game for the first time on October 4, 2015.

The games from the regular season are moderated and commented on by two people from the ran Football team from the ran studio in Unterföhring , Munich . The transmission signal from the US broadcaster showing the game in question is adopted. Icke Dommisch appears as a social media reporter on every program.

The two game seasons 2015 and 2016 were broadcast on ProSieben Maxx and the play-offs in 2016 and 2017 on Sat.1 and ProSieben Maxx. The Super Bowls 2016 and 2017 continued to be broadcast on Sat.1.

In mid-October 2016 it became known that Frank Buschmann would leave the show after the Super Bowl 2017. Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld also left the show in May 2017. Both signed exclusive contracts with Sky Deutschland .

Live broadcasts with a studio audience took place for the first time on January 14 and 15, 2017. The total of 100 studio tickets were sold within an hour.

2017 to 2019: Change of channel for broadcasts from Sat.1 to ProSieben

To compensate for the departures of Buschmann and Schmidt-Sommerfeld, another commentator casting was held in April and May 2017 under the hashtag #lasstmichran . The winner was Mattis Oberbach , who commented on a live game for the first time on September 10, 2017 together with Carsten Spengemann on ran.de. Spengemann is then also engaged as a moderator and commentator for the TV show.

At the beginning of September 2017, ProSiebenSat.1 Media announced that they had secured the broadcasting rights for at least two more years. However, the games are no longer shown on Sat.1 , but on ProSieben . This has been showing the kickoff game since the 2017 season and the Super Bowl since 2018. The play-offs have also been broadcast on ProSieben and ProSieben Maxx since 2018 . In addition, three games have been shown per game day since the 2017 season (two games: ProSieben Maxx, one game: ran.de).

On December 2, 2018, a regular game of the NFL season was commented live on site for the first time.

Since 2019: Expansion with College Football on ProSieben Maxx

At the end of June 2019, it was announced that ProSieben Maxx will be showing season games of US college football live from August 31, 2019 on Saturdays between 5:45 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

At the end of August 2019, ProSiebenSat.1 Media extended the contract for the broadcasting rights of the NFL for at least two more years.

Overview of television broadcasts

While from 2012 to 2015 only Sat.1 broadcast NFL games live on television, from the 2015 NFL season onwards ProSieben Maxx showed both Sat.1 and NFL games live. In 2017, Sat.1 dropped out of television broadcasts after the Super Bowl in February; Since the 2017 NFL season , ProSieben has been showing the games live together with ProSieben Maxx.
