Beverly Ann Johnson (born October 13, 1952 in Buffalo , New York ) is an American model , actress , singer and entrepreneur .

life and career

Beverly Johnson was raised in a middle class family in Buffalo, New York , as one of two children . Her mother was a surgical-technical assistant and her father a machine operator . In her youth she was a good swimmer and wanted to be a lawyer . First she attended Bennett High School in Buffalo, from which she graduated in 1969 . She then studied criminology at Northeastern University . During her studies she began to publish photos of herself. Initially, the photos appeared in glamor . In 1974 she became the first African American woman to appear on the front page of Vogue . Their appearance on Vogue was the starting signal for the fact that it was naturalized in the fashion industry and in magazines to also publish photos of colored models.

In the early 1980s, Johnson started a film career with roles in well-known films such as Ashanti (1979), Meteor Man (1993), Loaded Weapon 1 (1997) and Not a Girl (2002). At the same time, she was seen in various television series and released a music album . In Michael Jackson 's music video for his single Liberian Girl (1989) she plays the female lead and is named in the credits alongside many well-known film stars.

In 2014, Johnson accused Bill Cosby of sexual harassment while visiting his home in 1980.

Johnson was married to Billy Porter from 1971 to 1974 and then to Danny Sims from 1978 to 1979, with whom they also have a daughter.
