The main focus of the profession shows a wide range. The Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs has therefore decided that the current school content of the training occupation that corresponds to the focus should be used when training the trainees. This means that a trainee who is learning this profession with a focus on textile technology, for example , is trained as a textile production mechanic in accordance with the school regulations of the first and second year of training . Ideally, trainees in this focus also attend the same vocational school class as the textile production mechanics.

Apprentices who have completed their vocational training as machine and system operators can continue their training in a profession corresponding to the focus in the third and (if available) fourth year of training:

- Bookbinder specializing in book production (series) and print finishing (series)

- Packaging mechanic or packaging technologist
For the dairy specialist, there was a credit option for training contracts that were established until April 8, 2006. Since the profession was then modernized as a dairy technologist , after this reorganization it was no longer possible to credit it.
