Media technology print processing

The media technologist print processing has been a new state-recognized training occupation in Germany since August 1, 2011 according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG).

History of origin

Companies that produce large numbers of printed products have so far only been able to use bookbinders to process the products . However, this job description is characterized by more artisanal and manual production processes. Modern newspaper and book publishers , but also companies that produce commercial jobs , have different requirements for their specialists. Here the planning and control of production processes is in the foreground of the work. Processing plants must be planned, controlled and monitored. For this reason it was decided to keep the bookbinder, but to focus the activities more on the craft. The industry should have the opportunity to secure its skilled labor needs through its own training in a precisely tailored training occupation. The media technologist print processing can therefore be seen as a successor to the bookbinder in the field of book production (series) and the field of print finishing (series).

Duration of training and structure

Media technologist print processing

The training period to become a media technologist for print processing will be three years. Training takes place at the company and vocational school .

The profession has elective qualification units (WQs), ie modular training sections with which the company can adapt the content to its specific needs. In addition, there are mandatory minimum content that all companies that want to train in this profession must offer.

The company can select two elective qualification units, each lasting 13 weeks, from the following areas:

  1. Production preparation for mailroom technology
  2. Lines
  3. Machine technology and extended maintenance
  4. Perfect binding technology
  5. Saddle stitching technology
  6. Special print finishing processes
  7. Ceiling tape production

In addition, further WQs are available for a period of 26 weeks. They cover the production areas in which the profession is to be trained:

  1. Newspaper production
  2. Commercial production
  3. Book production

Intermediate and final exams

Overview of the exam to become a media technologist in print processing

In this profession, there is a conventional intermediate and final examination (i.e. no extended final examination ). The intermediate examination serves to determine the level of training of the trainee. It should give him information about where possible deficits lie that have to be compensated for by the final examination. The final examination is intended to determine whether the trainee has acquired the professional ability to act . He is supposed to prove “that he has mastered the necessary professional skills, has the necessary professional knowledge and skills and is familiar with the teaching material to be taught in vocational school, which is essential for vocational training. The training regulations are to be applied. ". The examination tasks are provided by the ZFA Druck-Medien . The exam takes place in front of an IHK .

midterm exam

The intermediate examination covers the contents of the first three semesters of training and should take place before the end of the second year of training. The two examination areas work planning and processing technology are provided.

In the work planning examination area, the trainee should plan work steps, determine work equipment, select materials, take into account the requirements of work, health and environmental protection as well as economic efficiency, accept and check order data, implement product and process data in the planning process, plan set-up and control processes on processing machines, Take into account the interactions between primary products, materials and machines in the manufacturing process and carry out processing-specific calculations. This evidence is provided through the processing of written tasks in a scope of 120 minutes.

In the processing technology test area, he sets two processing units according to specifications and documents his work. He has four hours for this task. He should show that he can set processing units typical of the company according to order data and specifications, carry out process controls as well as measurement and testing procedures and use their results to optimize the processing process and the processing result, manufacture sample products manually and automatically and document his work with documents customary in practice.

final exam

The final examination consists of four examination areas:

  • Print processing,
  • Order planning and communication,
  • Process technology as well
  • Economics and Social Studies.

Examination area print processing

The candidate produces a product in seven hours on an integrated processing plant or with several individual machines. The optional qualification unit specified in the training contract is taken into account. In addition, a situational technical discussion is held, which lasts a maximum of 10 minutes.

In this test area, the test participant demonstrates that he is able to plan process sequences, adjust processing systems with regard to their basic settings and take into account machine-technical correlations during functional tests. He shows that he can procure the specifications and materials required for the work order to set up processing systems, set up processing systems, start and control production, check, assess and optimize the production result. Furthermore, it is proven that he manufactures products in the specified quality on schedule, economically and taking into account the requirements of occupational health and safety and environmental protection, initiates measures to remedy faults, communicates process data and the changed production conditions resulting in the production process as well as machine-technical deviations and can document.

Examination area order planning and communication

In 120 minutes, the exam participant completes written tasks on the following topics:

  • Customer-oriented planning, implementation and documentation of work processes taking into account economic, technical, organizational and personal requirements,
  • Planning of work steps including information from upstream and downstream production areas,
  • Evaluation and documentation of machine data,
  • Consideration of the properties of preliminary products and materials as well as their interactions with one another and with the machines and systems used,
  • Execution of planning-relevant calculations.

Examination area process technology

In 120 minutes, the exam participant completes written tasks on the following topics:

  • Differentiation of processing processes with regard to their areas of application, assignment of main product groups,
  • Assessment and use of processing-specific parameters as well as production conditions in relation to processing equipment, preliminary products, materials, operational framework conditions and production specifications,
  • Application of quality assurance measures for the optimization of the processing result as well as use of process-related measurement and test methods,
  • Assessment of the functions of machine elements as well as measures for the maintenance of machines and systems,
  • Execution of process-related calculations.

Examination area economics and social studies

The exam participant completes written tasks in 60 minutes. He proves that he can present and assess general economic and social relationships in the professional and working world.

Weighting of the examination areas

The examination areas are weighted as follows:

Exam area weighting
Print processing 50 percent
Order planning and communication 20 percent
Process technology 20 percent
Economics and Social Studies 10 percent

Passage regulation

The examination has been passed if the overall result is at least "sufficient", in the examination area "print processing" with at least "sufficient", in at least two other examination areas with at least "sufficient" and in no examination area with "unsatisfactory".

Oral supplementary examination

An oral supplementary examination of around 15 minutes is possible in the examination areas “Order planning and communication”, “Process technology” or “Economics and social studies” if the final examination can be passed. The prerequisite is that these examination areas were rated worse than "sufficient". A supplementary oral examination to improve the grade is not possible.

Credit options

A trainee who has successfully completed his / her professional training as a machine and system operator with a focus on print finishing and paper processing can shorten the duration of a professional training as a media technologist print processing by two years.
