Lauri Vasar

Lauri Vasar (born October 17, 1970 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian opera singer ( bass baritone ).

Life

Lauri Vasar comes from an Estonian family of musicians: his father Harri Vasar (1926–1994) was a well-known operetta tenor, his mother Ülla Millistfer is a pianist and concertmaster at the Estonia National Opera. Vasar received violin lessons from the age of 5 and played as a violist in Tallinn Chamber orchestra. It was only at the age of 21 that he began to study singing at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn, which he completed with a diploma in viola and singing. He then studied singing at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Lilian Sukis until 1999 . Finally he was awarded the Bernhard Paumgartner Medal by the International Mozarteum Foundation .

At the beginning of his career Lauri Vasar was a member of the ensemble at the Landestheater Linz . In 2003 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival . In 2006 the Vienna State Opera awarded him the Eberhard Wächter Medal for his Orfeo interpretation. In 2007 Vasar left the Linz Opera and, after a stopover at the Hanover Opera , was engaged at the Hamburg State Opera from the 2009/10 to 2014/15 season . Guest engagements have taken him to international opera houses in Zurich , Milan , Paris , London , Barcelona , Madrid , Brussels and the Salzburg Festival . He has a close artistic relationship with Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin State Opera.

Guest performances also took him to the Theater an der Wien and Frankfurt a. M. and to Düsseldorf .

His repertoire includes the Wagner roles of Amfortas , Wolfram , Günther and Donner , the Count of Gloster in Lear, as well as the title roles from Eugene Onegin , Don Giovanni , Le Nozze di Figaro , Billy Budd and Marcello from La Bohème , Papageno, Sprecher, Conte, Guglielmo, Belcore, Escamillo , Chtchelkalov Schaklowity .
