Lilian Sukis

Lilian Sukis (born June 29, 1939 in Kaunas ) is a Lithuanian opera singer ( soprano ) and vocal teacher .

Life

Lilian Sukis was born in the second largest city of Lithuania, Kaunas, as the daughter of a university teacher and an officer. During the Second World War she emigrated with her mother from Lithuania to Germany and in 1950 on to Canada . There the family settled in Hamilton , Ontario .

After graduating from school, Lilian Sukis studied German and French literature as well as singing and piano at McMaster University in Hamilton . She continued her musical studies at the University of Toronto . There she studied with Irene Jessner, among others . In 1965 she graduated as the best of her year.

In the following years she sang in Stratford and Chicago , among others , before she was engaged by the Metropolitan Opera in 1966 . In 1969 she moved to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich . She gave guest appearances at various opera houses around the world.

1972 Lilian Sukis gave Angele Didier in Wolfgang Glück's film adaptation of the Count of Luxembourg .

In February 1981 she was awarded the title of chamber singer . In 1985 she was appointed professor at the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts . Since 1995 she has been professor for singing at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . Her students include Christiane Kohl and Wolfgang Nöth . In addition, she is or was a member of the jury at various competitions (including Jugend musiziert ). Lilian Sukis has only seldom seen on stage since 1990.
